I agree. I admit that I have left games early, but only three times and all three were blow outs, and we left in the middle of the 4th. A bigger problem is the asshat "fans" who don't want you cheering or standing. I will never sit in the suites again. Last year, my wife and I were chastised for getting up and cheering. This also happened in 2007 when we sat amongst the corpos in section 301. An older guy got mad at me for constantly getting up and yelling, to which I replied, "We're not at an opera, jack." When fans start getting lazy and just want to sit and talk during a game, that's when we lose our fire. We become less intimidating when people start treating football games as social gatherings. I do not want to end up like a bigger Latech fanbase.

Gentrification of the fanbase due to constant ticket increases, parking fees, and closing off large areas of campus that were formerly free to any tailgater.

Back before the Saban era, many of the fans were Joe 6 pack types, because the games were affordable even for people of modest means.

Unlike the today's predominantly upper middle class fans, those guys didn't have the number of distractions available to wealthy fans year round -- they can't afford to own condos in Orange Beach, or take cool vacations 4 times a year. LSU football is/was their highlight of the year. I know it's mine.

I am a blue collar fan who's been sort of forced out due to financial limitations.

To me the games aren't as fun now when I do go. All the parking regs, the high ticket prices, and the 'new' fanbase have changed the atmosphere in Tiger Stadium. People telling me to sit down, talking on their cellphones, not watching the game, walking to the concession stand in front of me on critical third downs -- stuff like that.

Interested fans don't text on 3rd and long for the opponent or go get a coke right then either. They stand up and cheer their asses off, or at least they used to.

I still love LSU football and it IS the highlight of my year in terms of entertainment.

I just think the blue collar fan base was more dedicated and some would say "hard core".

No offense to the other fans for I know many of you here have season tickets, TAF memberships, parking passes and all that.

The program needs you guys more than it needs me, in terms of getting the top coaches and the incredible facilities we now have. Without you we'd be stuck in the Dinardo era.

But every group has it attributes and weaknesses. Perhaps the blue collar folks, who work outside for a living, are more likely to stay in their seats in bad weather. Maybe they are more enthusiastic about being IN TIGER STADIUM than wealthier folks who can go to all sorts of fun places in the off season?

Its only an opinion and I know many will disagree.

That's fine.

I know we all support the Tigers in any way we can.

To the team: Good win last night.

To the fans that stayed till the end:

Amen. I watched the game on the internet, and was quite surprised that the stadium looked the way it did. I agree that we get so pumped up for the season, then disappear when it begins to rain.

Here is my "back in the day" rant. When I lived in L.C., we would make the trip to B.R. every Saturday, and would STAT to the flippin' clock read 00:00. Period. Win or lose. Hot, cold, wet or indifferent. I don't get to many games now being out of state, but would love to have the tickets that people only use half of....

I get so tired of hearing that and "I was here during the ______ years". So what, younger fans have the same right(s)as our veteran fans. They too pay tuition, for tickets, LSU apparel, etc.

Don't mean to bag on you but people play that card like it's a one-up on our younger fans.

I agree....I will bash the tigers from time to time and want to choke the life out of Miles, Crowton, etc.....BUT....when I go to the game, I stay to the bitter end (rain or shine)....I dont get out of my seat unless I have actually come excrutiatingly close to pissing my pants and I yell till my fking head feels like its going to explode (and I start seeing those little dots from lack of oxygen). Where did those days go for most Tiger fans???????????????????

WNC, good post.

BUT: that leads to the next good question:

Florida, for instance, needs the same financial support from the fat cats that we do for their facilities, recruiting budget, etc.

I've never been to Gainesville for a game but I'm sure that parking, tickets, concessions etc. are the same for them as for us.

WHY don't you see the Florida fans leaving en masse? They stay til the end yelling their heads off in a rainstorm against a mid-major they are pounding the shite out of.

WHY in the last 3 years or so especially, has the TS crowd got so blue-blooded and uppity and uncaring that the national media recognizes it as an anomaly among big-time, elite programs?

What you say is true--but are others like Florida and Texas etc. finding a way to keep the everyday fan in the stands or are their fat cats more passionate and fanatic than our fat cats?

Well tonytiger61, my point is not to bash those that leave a game late in the fourth quarter in a blowout and in a driving rain. However, IMO to leave a close game at halftime against a quality opponent, that's a whole other story.

This is not a new phenomenon. Its been occurring for years. Just that last night we were called on it by the announcers covering the game.

I left at half time. I make no excuses but if you want to know my reasoning here it is:

My wife bought the tickets through ticketmaster last week (before labor day). For us & the 2 kids. 4 rows from the top of the upper section pretty much in the end zone. We were grateful to get them for face value for the opening game against an SEC team. It would be our one game we pop for each year or so.

On Labor day, the flu hit our house. Mine was pretty mild. About a day of headaches, 2-3 days of nausea & congestion. My son (13) had it worse. Missed 3 days of school (very unusual for him to miss any days). Friday he was feeling better, went to school.

When the forecasts came out late in the week we took a wait and see attitude. Went to the high school game Friday night and mostly missed the rain.

Saturday, after working till noon, checked the weather and decided to chance it. Through 4 hours of checking out the tailgaters, tossing the football, visiting Mike's cage, cheering as Les and the team came down the hill, screaming as the band came down the hill, watching the pre-game and through the first quarter, the rain held off.

When it rained hard through the 2nd quarter we stayed put with our ponchos and stayed mostly dry. At half time with it still raining hard I decided I had pushed it as far as I was willing. Didn't want to expose my boy to another half of hard rain. So we left.

I was kind of surprised at the number of people watching on tv's in tail gate tents and campers in the parking lots. Anyway, about 3/4 way back to the car (near river road) the rain pretty much quit. Got in the car and went home. Listened to the end on the radio.

So bash away. My concience is clear.

I got a taste of it last night sitting in the south endzone. And this is a majore reason why our stadium atmosphere isn't what it used to be. Me and a buddy and my Dad stood up during a big 3rd down, and stayed standing to watch the 4th down punt by vandy, during the punt one of the old ushers or security guys came and made us sit down. I was shocked, we were standing for all of 30 seconds while play was going on and were told to sit. Said to myself, "its a sad day when that happens here." My dad said he's never had anyone say that to him at a game before.

Exactly, it is a mixture of that and people who are bandwagon lsu fans getting tickets. They go to the game because it is the "cool" thing to do. That stadium was ten times louder in the 70's and early 80's without the upper decks.

Damn. Ordered by an usher to sit down in the hallowed South End Zone.

Unreal.

The thing that really pisses me off is that there is a huge waiting list of fans that would snatch those seats up in a hurry and pay for them year in/year out. And they would show up for every game and would bring ponchos like everybody else did.
