Basketball: LSU (13-10,3-6) vs Alabama (16-7,5-4) | Sat 6PM | PMAC | TV:ESPN2

SoS’s Power Rankings 2/5/12
1. Kentucky
2. Florida
3. Miss St
4. Vanderbilt
5. Alabama
6. LSU
7. Ole Miss
8. Arkansas
9. Tennessee
10. Auburn
11. Georgia
12. South Carolina

General Overview

There are three main differences in this game versus the game played on Jan 11th. First is location. Obviously LSU has played better at home and Bama has also struggled a little bit on the road. Second big difference is we were without JOB3 during the first meeting. JOB has come in and really helped on the boards in SEC play averaging 7.5v rebounds per SEC contest. And last but not least, Alabama suspended F Tony Mitchell this past week. Though Alabama played well against Auburn without him, it was only Auburn.

LSU lost their last game versus Vandy mostly due to poor shooting. They were able to do well on the rebounding and only had 6 turnovers the entire game. If LSU can get it’s shooters going, this team could be tough to beat. Unfortunately that hasn’t been the case. Stringer has really been off since his fainting spells, and Hickey has started to miss some good looks as well. Turner had a solid game against Vandy and looks to improve on a season that has been a letdown/soph slump for him.

The PMAC should be pretty electric with the night game. LSU needs to play well in their national coverage game on ESPN2. Obviously this will be a game people will see and with Alabama on the bubble and LSU closely behind them it could be a season changing game if the Tigers play their best.

Schedule and SEC stakes

Kentucky has put some space between them and the rest of the pack and Florida, Vandy and Miss State has the top 4 rounded out pretty set, but Many believe a 5th team will make the NCAA Tourney so that leaves Alabama, LSU, Arkansas, and Ole Miss fighting for what will probably be the last spot. Ultimately it is possible these teams beat up on each other so much that none make the tourney but I think the SEC has enough respect this year and with a down ACC year to get the 5th team in.

Obviously those stats alone make this a huge game, but even more than that this is where LSU has to start playing the way they want to finish the season. If that is lethargic, then expect the rest of the season to go down poorer than any of us hope, but if we can come out and attack Alabama and their tough man to man defense, hopefully it will help set the tone for how we finish out the season.

I think it's Roman Rubchenko bobble head night.

I might have my dates mixed up, though.

Releford is the PG and Steele is the SG.

Alabama isn't really on the bubble either according to Lunardi and Palm FWIW.

Do you think a lot of people will show? I've watched a few LSU games this year and the PMAC has looked empty basically every time.

Turner really needs to come into his own. He seems to be trying to break out of his sophomore slump lately. Also, Isaac has been MIA the past 2 games, I'm kinda curious about that with Stringer struggling so much. Isaac is solid on D.

Student section will be relatively full (not UK big, but still) since it's the 2nd priority point night... I'd bet we get right around 5K there (not a lot by my definition, but not a bad crowd

That's why I asked because both these two things made me scratch my head.

I agree with you for the most part but they are a different team without Mitchell. Mostly
Because they hVe no backup Forward. Against Auburn Steele had a ton of assists and so I assumed that the changes of going to a 4 guard set on occasion completely disrupted their guard rotation. Either way those are the players that should be playing and whether Steele or Releford bring it up the court look for Steele to make some good passes.

Steele has the highest basketball IQ for our team definitely, but Releford will be the press beater. Without Mitchell, we used a lot more Hankerson and Cooper in our lineup and that really helped. Both of those guys knocked down some shots. I think losing Mitchell has been an addition by subtraction type deal. Just from the looks on everyone's faces during the Auburn game, we were having more fun and playing a lot looser without him. Our offense flow was much better as well. We'll see if that continues Saturday night.

I don't think that Alabama is really on the bubble.

The dopes on ESPN were discussing the merits of Ole Miss AND Arkansas as tournament teams last night.

You'd have a really hard time convincing me there's much difference between Arkansas, LSU, Ole Miss and Alabama. It's a "any given night" kind of thing, and I think the results from this season reflect that.

Alabama is definitely on the bubble, and without Mitchell, not on the good side of the bubble.

I think it's a must-win game for LSU. If Trent can't beat Bama in a high-stakes game at home, when they don't have Tony Mitchell, then this season is probably done. (if it's not already).

I disagree, but only from the standpoint that winning ONE out of Vandy, Bama and State wasn't a MUST, but important, in that it leaves a lot on the table for the rest of the season.

In order to keep 9-7, and that tiny flicker of an NCAA hope alive, they need to beat State or Alabama, and Alabama is definitely the more winnable of the two. That said, even losing on Saturday, while not IDEAL, is still not the end of the world. LSU is capable of beating State (or more directly, State is capable of losing to LSU), but I sure as hell wouldn't put money on it.

If not, still a reasonable shot to finish 7-9 or 8-8 by closing out the season well..... but, we CAN beat Alabama.... and it would be great for the kids' confidence if they did.

Up to them to get it done.

I like our chances without Mitchell and at home, they just seem to shoot better in the PMAC (which makes sense, being familiar with the arena).

Don't add to the stigma of Bama fans being delusional... He was a force man. Y'all don't have a backup forward anymore. In no way does a 15 pt win over Auburn mean y'all are Better without mitchell.

Why do I think the crowd will be electric? Because it Bama. Lsu fans love beating Bama. Do I think there will be 12k there? No but it's an espn game and a priority point game for students. I think it Gould be the loudest of any sec game this year.

Might win, but I don't think LSU will put up 70. Only three teams have gotten 70+ on us all year. More teams have scored in the 40s than the 70s. FWIW.
