My experience in Athens was less then stellar for 2004 game. Probably one of the worst road trips I've been on. 1st almost had a brawl in the parking lot we where tailgating in because some idiot Georgia students lit a LSU car flag on fire. Luckily some older Georigia and LSU fans diffused the situation. 2ndly some idiot Georgia student threw a live snake right in the middle of our tailgate. We where just stilling around drinking and some idiot threw a snake in our tailgate and yelled go back to Louisiana your fricking coonasses. 3rdly after the game we where packing our shite up and again some idiot Georgia students stuck their head in our car and preceded to bark at our women. Classless fans and we got killed that day as well. Mind you I can take stuff like back and forth trash talk but this was too much.

Sorry you had a bad time. Most visiting fans have said great things about Athens. Alcohol and 20 year old college students can be a bad mix sometimes.

Good luck finding a hotel. I doubt you could find one downtown at this point in time, but Taxis can take you to/from downtown.

I don't know OPs age, but the bar scene kind of depends on your age. Good thing about Athens is there are 40ish bars with no cover so you can kind of hop around bars until you find your crowd. I don't know the schedule for the Georgia Theatre, but if they have a show that night it's probably the coolest place in downtown Athens.

What bars are ideal for college aged kids? And whats the closest place to Athens to realistically get a hotel at this point? I'd rather not stay in Atlanta if I don't have to. I want to be able to go out in Athens the night before the game

I mean with the exception of 2-3 bars, they're all geared for the college crowd since that's obviously their target crowd.

My favorites are Allgood, Boar's Head, Arch Bar, Magnolias, Double Barrel, and Generals. 9D's or Cloud are decent places to take a girl to dance or to go have a random makeout session with a single girl if you've struck out. Freshman with bad fake IDs usually go to Whiskey Bent or Silver Dollar. All this said though, you literally can bounce around from bar to bar until 2am. It's rare that we stay at a bar for more than a drink or two, we usually get one somewhere and then go check out who's at the next place. That can be a pain with gameday crowds though.

Honestly I've never dealt with hotels in Athens on gameday. All of the football roadtrips I went on I usually just had a high school friend going to the school and I crashed at their place. Maybe see if you have a friend going with you who knows a student. I doubt you'll get anything on campus or downtown, but there are hotels on the other side of Athens that are probably a 10 minute ride to downtown. I'd start calling soon because those may fill up/be full. I guess Lawrenceville or Commerce would be the closest places with hotels that aren't in Athens and both are 30ish minutes away.

I actually do have a friend who goes there, but he's not really a close enough friend to want to crash at his place, especially since I'm going with 3 other people that don't know him as well as I do.

Thanks for the advice on the bars. We're all actually only 20 so we may have to stick the the shitty fake ID bars

Im staying in atlanta and plan on taking a limo to the game as well. We have a group of 8 early 30 somethings. It looks like about 1000 bucks to take a limo which is worth it to me to not have to drive and deal with all of that but the party bus sounds sweet to. We are staying at Marriot in Midtown. If any LSU fans want to get a friday happy hour spot or night spot going to meet up that would be a great way to start the trip.

I live in Georgia. I will be taking the entire family to the game. Should be a good one but I sure hope we win for bragging rights as I live all around Georgia fans. Geaux Tigers.

Like wise as I live behind enemy lines in Madison Al. But I give the gumps hell every day. U talk about poor loosers let them lose a football game & they run under a log until the beat a team like Kent St. Also they don't ULM anymore.

I've heard there are new/strict tailgate restrictions in Athens and its better to just go to the bars before the games, any truth to this?

Taking a limo in from Atlanta on gameday, whats traffic like getting into Athens for a 3:30 game?

I wish - splitting it with 5 other guys so we don't have to drive. Couldn't get a hotel room in Athens so had to do so in Atlanta

I'm paying $189 a night for my hotel room in Atlanta. I don't know if that's baller status but I feel good about it.

I'll be hitting up Magic City on Thursday and Friday night as well. I don't know if it's really "4 to 1" in Atlanta, but I do know that if you're an "assman," there's no better place to be than Atlanta.

You'll be staying way outside of Athens. Probably 15-20 minutes out unless you have booked already.

There are a ton of bars around there. We had a great time at Boar's Head last time we played there.

Leave very early - a lot of red lights along the route which stack up with the heavy traffic. We are driving up Wednesday and staying with some dawg friends at their home in Athens. Tailgating at the Episcopal Church on campus.
