Are we heading in the same direction as Texas and Mack Brown did?

After Texas' NC run was stopped by Bama in 09, they went into a serious state of decline, and are just now finally seeing some light. So look at Mack Brown's records since the 09 season:

2009: 13-1
2010: 5-7
2011: 8-5
2012: 9-4
2013: 8-5

Is this not eerily similar to what is currently going on with LSU and Les? I know we are very fortunate to not have a losing season since 1999, but I can't help but feel we are heading down the same path as Texas, or even Tennesse, but we'll hit rock bottom before its too late. I am not just melting over just the one loss this season, but this started last year when our coach was on his way out because he was clearly not seeing the big picture, and for him to bring his little pecker head buddy back just made things worse.

No doubt. It's gonna get worse.

Comparison is somewhat fair.

Texas had their decline in a much weaker conference, and was consistently putting weaker teams on the field than LSU has in the last 3 years. But, I guess, if you count playing in the SEC instead of the Big 12 as an advantage, then maybe it evens out.

LSU has had nothing close to approaching the 2010 Texas season.

I think Mack is a great comparison. He became to comfortable and to entrenched and made some bad coaching decisions by putting friendships ahead of performance.

The only difference is that Mack slacked off on recruiting and it started showing up in results. Les still recruits his tail off.

We could be in the beginning of it right now. We are going to play 6 teams that are better than Wisconsin before the season is over. We could lose them all.

The difference is Mack Brown recited horribly at the end. Les is recruiting better than ever. Yet we lose to freaking Wisconsin. With a miserable offense.

Actually, another full season of Miles will land us in Tennessee territory. That's why he must go now.

As a counter to that however, Mack did at least attempt to change up the offensive scheme. It's clear Miles will never make a change to the offense.

When exactly did the fan base turn on Mack? Or did he keep getting passes because of his NC?

I believed he resigned in his last year, which was probably the best thing he could do with the situation.

Yes, but fortunately, just like Texas, we're also in great position to rebuild when we get the right coach.

With the right hire, we could easily be the next Florida State that surges back to title contention after years of irrelevancy. Still, you look at teams like Miami and Nebraska that still haven't rebuilt to where they were 20 years ago.

I'm optimistic we can be successful quickly with the right hire. Everything that coach would need is already in place. Great recruiting pool, facilities, fan support, etc.

It sure seems that way.

The one difference is recruiting. Miles brings in top 5 classes year after year but that doesn't carry over to play on the field. It's frustrating to see latter when you know the talent is there.

Which leaves only one thing to consider: coaching.

Would still be different, considering Mack Brown coached for 3 years following that season. It was a weird outlier, after a national championship appearance.

A better comparison would be recruiting rankings. IIRC Texas really struggled with that which is why it has taken Strong so long to get them back on track. At least we are still recruiting well, so a new HC could be successful right away.

Yes - and if we don't learn from Texas' mistake in keeping Mack around too long, we'll suffer the same fate.

Mack completely stopped recruiting. That's about the least of Miles' problems outside of QB.

And like Les, he left a year too late

If Les leaves in the next year or two, he'd leave LSU in an infinitely better condition than Mack left Texas.

Honestly the only thing missing is offense. Of Les had just brought in fresh eyes on offense and stayed out of it like he did on defense, we'd still be a top 5 program/team.

He chose not to, even after last year.
