After listening to him talk defense I came away very impressed, especially with him talking about putting his players in the best situation to succeed. You could tell he is a defensive junkie and he's very intelligent talking about defense. I think him and Coach O Will bring back the pressure defense that we are used to seeing at LSU

That's a nice quote but realistically do you think every other coach in the country doesn't try to do that?

Of course they do. But listening to this guy, it is not difficult to get excited that he may very well be able to do just that.

They do, but I think the thing to note with Aranda is he is an up and comer with a slightly different defensive mindset. Something that has found great success with far inferior talent than that which he will have at LSU.

That is likely why we as LSU fans are putting him on a pedestal and why this is considered one of the best hires we could have made.

Also appears to be the type of DC who is on the field during the game, ready to get in someone's face with instructions and adjustments. He looks like a ban of high-octane fuel, GT!

No, t think most coaches, at all levels, think their system is the way to succeed and that they can teach players to play in that system. It takes true coaching talent to know the difference. It's not easy to be great at teaching one system much less being able to know and use multiple.

All coaches want to do that, but can they teach them to do that?

Being a great/elite coach is contingent on two things.
1. Great players (which LSU has)
2. Being a great teacher. You can have the best game plan known to man on paper, but if you can't teach the great players how to execute the plan, then it's just meaningless.

Actually, comments from players that have played under him paint a completely opposite picture.

Looking at what he did at Wisconsin with 2-3* recruits, I am looking forward to seeing what he could do with LSU's 4-5* players.

While true, when you read more about his defensive scheme, he seems to have a somewhat unorthodox system that is designed specifically to create favorable match ups every play.

Two things stood out to me in his answer to the very first question he was asked at the press conference.
When asked what he would consider to be hallmarks of an Aranda defense he used the terms, "smart aggression", and "flipping the math."
The first term is pretty much self explanatory. The second term reminds me of a phrase sometimes attributed to Confederate officer, Nathan Bedford Forrest, "getting there firstest with the mostest" - a highly effective tactic in any sort of conflict - whether you're talking about the battlefield. a chess board, or the gridiron.

I really love this hire.

He is the exact opposite of this. He is self-described as quiet, and cerebral rather than emotional.

In fact, in an interview he did recently after he got the LSU gig, Aranda thanked Chryst (Wisky's coach) for "letting him be him." In other words, Chryst let Aranda be quiet and contemplative, because that's who he is, rather than demand he be emotionally vocal, which is the norm.

As compared to viewing Steele's 'welcome to LSU' PC, I felt like the 2008 defense flu could rear itself again.

Did not pass the ear test, IMO.

Water under bridge, thankfully.

Steele wasn't even the focal point of his introductory PC, it was the O show.
