I didn't say you were mass hallucinating but the live horse thing didn't happen. The Chief was an imposter that was part of LSU's skit to fire up the fans.

Oranges were on the field before the game even started in 82, trust me, I was throwing them with everyone else

FSU did not bring their horse. That was a "setup" guy for Mike to trample

but the oranges did fly for a full four quarters and yes penalties were called on LSU but it was way over by that point and no one cared

ahhhh when fans could be really stupid, what fun those days were

The horse and rider were not really from Fla. State. It happened before the coin toss and maybe just before the teams had run out onto the field. If it didn't happen . . . then I and all of my friends at the game had one mass hallucination.
Oh it happened. There wasn't a horse, but the Indian threw the spear and mike broke it over his knee. When he did that the crowd erupted. Then the Indian pulled out a tomahawk and Mike ends up scalping him. A friend of mine was at the game from Texas Tech. His was quite over whelmed with every thing that was going on.

Was there in the student section. Oranges rained down on the field, but I dont remember them bringing a horse. And if they did, it would not have come to the other side where we were. The oranges didnt start til the latter part of the game.

That is exactly the way I remember it.

My brother was suited up for that game; he told me they had to keep their helmets on through the whole game on the sidelines because of the constant rain of oranges...He said they were ricocheting of of helmets, shoulder pads, etc...

I don't remember the horse. But, Risher, Hilliard and Martin were awesome. Too bad we lost to Tulane later

EXACTLY. Always the letdown game. Tulane, Ole Miss(in their down years), etc. No more letdowns!!

The "chief" on the horse was a comlete setup. He was not really from Fla. State. It was an LSU guy dressed up like a "Seminole" and he did ride a horse. The Tiger mascot pulled him off and pretended to stick him with the lance the rider had been carrying.

Later in the game, the crowd was throwing oranges onto the field.
THAT is totally awesome! I don't remember hearing about that. What a gag that must have been. I wish they did more of that stuff these days but the PC crowd would bellow.

Was a freshman that year and one of the best memories in Tiger Stadium. Those were the days, anyone with a student id could enter the game. All you had to do is show your id, they would punch a hole in it and you could sit where you wanted.

As for the Mike the Tiger/Osceola battle, it did happen. There was no horse, Osceola (imposter) snuck up on Mike the Tiger, he threw the spear, Mike caught it and then broke it over his leg. The crowd erupted and it was loud. As their fight ensued, it rained oranges and Osceola was scalped while being pelted with oranges. It rained oranges all through the game. Even seem to remember the announcer saying if anymore oranges were thrown on the field, they would award FSU a touchdown. The latter statement may or may not be true, we had been drinking bourbon all day.

As for who the guy portraying Osceola, I think the Reveille did a story on him.

The Fla. St. QB that year, is a good friend of mine and he has some great stories of that game. Besides getting pelted with oranges, he said that it was the worst physical beating he'd ever had. When they came out of the visitor's tunnel and Mike roared from his cage, he said he almost peed his pants. He said Tiger Stadium was the toughest place to play no doubt.
