I remember the fla state mascot jabbing the spear in the ground, mike the tiger pulling it out of the ground and breaking it over his knee. And lots of oranges.

Later in the game, the crowd was throwing oranges onto the field.
The Orange bombardment started after the first touchdown and continued throughout the game after every score.

1982 LSU
I think that was LSU's in-house highlight reel (narrated by Dr. Mackey?).
There was also a 30 or 60 minute highlight reel of the 1982 season called "A Proud Tradition Reborn" which was narrated by the legendary John Facenda(I think).
I know I watched this. Can anyone else confirm?

i was at both games and yes we snuck in oranges and yes we tossed them on the field. in both games a win sent us to the orange bowl. i don't recall pelting the fsu mascot though but i remember archie manning had a cast on his arm and we tryed to pelt him. in those days, the hate for ole miss was real.

I thought it was John Ferguson. I was in the 1980 highlight reel......would love to see myself skinny with hair again.
FSU '82 is still my favorite game that I ever attended.

That's weird.
I was also there as a 10-year old with my dad.
Incredible atmosphere for that game.
Right on....born and raised in NOLA, graduated high school from Brother Martin in 1990 and LSU in 1995

I threw oranges, but dont recall the chief. One thing i can say for sure, Bobby Bowden would go anywhere and play anyone back in the day.
That's because FSU had virtually no fan base and couldn't fill their stadium. It was an all girls school until about 1950.

Ramsey Dardar abused their all-everything center though.

quote:Hahah. I was there too but we didn't "sneak" any in. We carried bags of them in. We'd pummel the field after every score. End of the game everyone unloaded all they had--it was so crazy! My friend and I ran down to the field where we spotted the news camera people hiding from the barrage. We asked, "you getting this?" and they looked at us like we were fricking stupid. Dumbass reporters afraid of a few oranges.
yes we snuck in oranges
I got smacked in the head a few times but I loved every minute of it.
I do remember reading in the paper the next day that someone was pissed about the oranges. Said, "what did the ticket takers think they were gonna do with all those oranges? Eat them?!"

I was there and it really happened. Thank GOD we were sitting at the top.
Not fun being pelted by oranges (by all the people who can't throw)

Someone should bring Ramsey some oranges in whatever penal institution he is in.

Hunt Correctional Institution in St Gabriel. I saw him on MSNBC Lockup. No joke.

Yeah, I saw it on TV and I remember my Dad was at the Ole Miss game in the 70's and started talking about it

I too was there. I remember all the oranges but I can almost guarantee LSU didn't allow that horse and Indian into Tiger Stadium. I remember the fog at the end of the game was weird. The drive across the basin coming home was just as weird. I do remember our mascot Mike the Tiger breaking an Indian type spear at mid field prior to the game, though. Just don't believe the live horse and rider thing happened. Oh and Dardar is serving a long prison term for armed robbery in Hunt Correctional.

I guarantee you it did and that it was a planned joke by LSU. The horse and rider were not really from Fla. State. It happened before the coin toss and maybe just before the teams had run out onto the field. If it didn't happen . . . then I and all of my friends at the game had one mass hallucination.

quote:This happened - I remember it vividly. Not sure if it was the real FSU mascot (and it was an agreed upon event) or if it was one of our guys playing a part.
Didn't Chief come out on the field in the pregame with his flaming spear and Mike ran over and broke it?
Chief came out, did a little display in front of the student section, then planted the spear. I don't remember if it was lit or not. During the display, Mike was sneaking up from behind. Chief cowered away in fear and Mike picked the spear from the ground and dramatically broke it over his knee.
It was corny as hell, but cool. I was 13, so that probably had something to do with my perception of it.

Yep. That's the way it happened. And it was clearly staged by LSU. But it was cool.

I don't remember oranges being thrown at chief osceola. But I do remember the spear and it was before the game. Fog did settle in during the 2nd half.
My best memory though was me and some friends use to sell peanuts during the game and when the oranges were pushed off the field we were selling them back to the students 3 or 4 for a $1.
I may have sold you some oranges
