Anyone heard of Saban before LSU?

Just saying with a little research and a little luck maybe our next coach could be the next Saban. We are all to tired and frustrated to not take a chance.

If you know our bowl history, you should have.

Exactly. Or Miles, or Dinardo? No. LSU has done as much or more for all three guys than they've ever done for us and until we realize this our program will sit in mediocrity.

Yeah, I watched the 1995 independence bowl

Considering that he coached against LSU in the 1995 Independence Bowl while head coach of Michigan State, yes, I think it's safe to say that people who weren't complete dolts were familiar with Saban.
Plus, he was an NFL defensive coordinator for four seasons.
This belief that Saban emerged from nowhere is just erroneous.

There were a lot of Archers, Hallmans and Dinardos before Saban. How many years of my life went by not achieving even the Les Miles level. You need to think hard about this because you and I won't be making the ultimate decision. This is one bad decision from a guy coming in and doing something completely different in recruiting with different guys who may not know the area. Kind of like what happened with the DC position. I hope it turns out fine but I'm bracing for the fallout in recruiting and that coaches decision making.
Personally, if I don't hear Fisher, Gundy, or Meyer (if he would consider it), I will be very concerned.
Alleva flushed Chavis out and now we're trying to figure out what type of coordinator/recruiter we have now because he is what Miles was allowed to hire.

I think all LSU fans did. LSU played his Michigan State team in the Weed Eater Bowl.

He didn't emerge from nowhwere but we absolutely helped his career as much as he helped our program.

Actually, yes. My father was a ND grad and I watched a lot of ND football... Saban was at Mich St then, people feared his D back then too.
Funny thing was, no one talked about his LB's back then but he made Mich, OSU, and ND's run games look pathetic at times. Didn't win a butt load of games, but we're talking about an upstart program at the time against perennial top-10 teams.
Slightly different scheme today with different/better hosses. Back then he coached the DB's up well, and stacked the box like 99% of the time and used a variation of the, at the time, new-fangled zone blitz.
ETA (after reading the other posts): LSU did as much to make Saban a "Championship Coach" as he did to "turn LSU around". He would have had to have stayed in the B1G another decade to shake the other B1G powers off of him. By then Tenn and UF had put the SEC at the top of the BCS map and overall football-demographics had changed the recruiting scene.

Yes, he was known but after we beat Mich St in the bowl, I don't think people were beating the door down to get him.

Bill Belichick had.

I agree that a coach hire should go beyond a coach having 1good year because he was tied to a star QB like Hallman was with Farve. Instead look into a coach that been hired and his team has shown steady improvement over a few years.

did you know that we played a saban coached team in '95
did you know that saban took a floundering MSU team (they were 0-11 the year before he got there!!!!) and built it into a co-conference champion (pre big-10 championship game)

Saban is arguably the 2nd best College football coach ever. Hell by the time he retires he might be the greatest.

Just like his time here, Saban was in demand,or mentioned for every opening until 1999.

Yeah, we just need to find a college coach no Tiger fans have heard of that has been offered NFL head coaching jobs prior to coming here

Bingo. The prevailing thought at the time was what they hell were we doing hiring the guy the Dinardo beat in the bowl game. Not many people had any confidence in the Saban hire at the time it was announced.

Absolutely I had heard of him, was a big admirer of his coaching ability, but I thought he would never consider coming to LSU. Was thrilled when we hired him.

most people wasn't enthused with the hire as i remember ...
i think the op was referring to his status as one of the up and coming top tier coaches ...
and i agree at some point we have to make a change and trust that the folks in charge will make the right hire ...
but i also believe clm deserves one more year at this point ....
