I have read this site's meltdowns, had some of my own over the weekend, and here's my take that I don't think I've seen articulated. The idea that one could simply replace Les Miles with any motivational coach and the organization would continue to move forward better than ever is ridiculous. A plan like this can only work in well organized, ordered situations where everyone is already moving in the same direction with clear plans in place. You could argue that maybe Saban builds a machine that sets future coaches up for success. But, does that sound like a description of the last few years of LSU under Les Miles? He was the antithesis of Saban's process, which was his most endearing (and infuriating) trait to fans.

I don't mean this in any disrespect to Les; he made his team into a family, he put them in the position to succeed, they fought like hell for him and worked their butts off for him and that was his strength. His process, however, did not seem to be the epitome of organization and delegation of duties and clearly focused long-term planning where anyone could just step into and run things in his absence. He probably had a million things he did over a season that nobody really understood or knew about, and then when he is gone, they fall between the cracks. He may have also relied on Frank Wilson a lot more than is commonly discussed for program organization.

In other words, in a program of the scale of LSU football, you can't just pluck him from the top, replace him with someone else, and expect it to work. Joe Alleva HAD to know that, and HAD to know this was a dumb experiment doomed to fail long-term. That's what we pay him to know; he's in the building with the football program every damn day and sees how it runs. That is why you have to fire him before he screws this up any more, and bring in a new AD that can provide some support and righting of the ship to the existing coaching staff for now, and can manage a competent search when we can afford to move forward.

TL;DR Fire Joe Alleva; his incompetence is easily visible to outsiders (and maybe from space)

I get your point, but with this I disagree. I agree that you can;t just plug anyone in, not do anything good of their own, and hope that the previous vision keeps going in lieu of the the former person still being there running it...but what about replacing the former person with someone with a vision of their own...who does those things his own way?

People in jobs all over the world get replaced every day by people who can step in and do them with out the wheels flying off, in most cases because a solid job search was done and the replacement was a good fit for the job and qualified to do it.

Basically, LSU hired a fry cook to be the CEO of McDonalds, and then gave him a buyout as if he were the CEO of Apple.

firing Alleva is a long term strategy. The team still has to play many games in the short term. They need and can win some games.

I always said that was a lot of people's problem with Miles (before the decline) . He wasn't Nick

Yet, he didn't do so.

Will Muschamp has failed once already. Bobby Williams failed miserably at Mich State. Derek Dooley was a complete failure at Tennessee. The jury is still out on McIlwain's abilities at Florida--they are very lucky to have the last two wins. Smart is in his second year and has Georgia looking legit.

Only Jimbo Fisher, who is more from the Bowden coaching tree than the Saban one, has succeeded at the highest level.

Also, no former Saban assistant has ever beaten him.

Every coaching hire is a bit of a gamble.
