3rd and Chavis Defensive Scheme

How are we going to play it without Chris Hawkins and Rahim Alem in the lineup? We need those guys to be successful in getting no pressure off the edge and giving up huge receptions on 3rd and 18. I'm afraid this defense won't work this year. We clearly don't have the personnel this year.

I smiled at that...nice one

You have no clue what you're talking about. Alem was an All-State player in his time at LSU. He dominated ULL, La. Tech, Tulane and ULM

If you've ever used the term "third and chavis" then you're very misinformed.
LSU's defense was 6th last year in total touch downs allowed. LINK
They were 11th in total scoring defense LINK
The third down conversion percentage against their defense was 36.76%. This places them at 38th in the country in this category (which is rather irrelevant compared to scoring defense but lets just entertain the idea for a second). 36%, 38th place of 120 teams. The 9th place team (nearly 20 spots ahead of LSU) in this category was still in the 30% conversion rate, and even Alabama was 29.9% (they were 6th in 3rd down conversion defense). LINK
Take these stats and consider:
1.) It was John Chavis's first year
1a.) There was limited time to teach LSU's current defense to forget the co-d coordinator disaster and learn the BASICS of a 4-3 zone blitz defense (which more or less uses 4-2-5 personnel.
1b.) There was limited time to find and move players into positions that they belonged in (ie saftey to linebacker and cb's to safetys etc etc)
1c.) Obviously, even if there was more time, he's still playing with someone else's recruits. Meaning he hasn't gotten to go hand pick the type of players that he wants to play in each spot.
2.) LSUs offense was TERRIBLE
2a.) this led to LSU's defense being on the field more than about 90 of the 120 other defenses in the country.
Now, the next time you say third and chavis, remember this post, and think about when your parents told you there is no Santa Clause, i'm telling you there's no "third and chavis" whoever made that shite up is a moron and whoever repeats it is spreading ignorance throughout the fan community.

According to the statistics the only thing that is real is your ignorance, in and out of tiger stadium.

Step away from the computer and find someone to give you a hug. Dont worry about 3rd and Chavis real or not. This year will answer many questions.

I couldn't agree with Eric more. The defense did their job last year. It was the offense that couldn't hold up its end of the bargin.
With an improved running game this year helping to extend the time the defense is off the field and with a second year under Chavis, LSU's defense will be that much better.

seems like UT came up with 3rd and Chavis when they routinely had bad offenses....

Your stats are impressive, but I think we still gave up too many 3rd and longs. Perhaps the reasoning behind the pervasive "3rd and Chavis" discussion and the fact that it still lives is that the team gave up IMPORTANT 3rd down conversions which either allowed a score or were late in the game which prevented us from getting the ball again to try to score and win the game. Of course a lot of this may be attributed to the offense sucking and leaving the D on the field too long therefore they were "tired". A common excuse.

3rd and rape us reared it's ugly head late in the bowl game

I am so glad Rahim Alem is gone. He should have never played another down after that debacle where he kicked the football and helped cost us the game.

The third down conversion percentage
I would like to know what percentage of drives that contained a converted third down ended in TDs or FGs.

I want to know how many of those conversions went for a 1st Down with the distance more than 8 yards. That to me was 3rd and Chavis, getting 1st downs on 3rd and Long. I do not question the overall effectiveness and success of the D last year, but man I could have sat easily in my chair if we would not give up the 3rd and Long like we did in the Arkansas game.
