I think the market rate is just perception. You have a difficult time making the money back you spent (cost + TAF).

The perception grossly overestimates the real market value across the entire season. For SHSU, NMSU, ULM the market value will be $20 if you're lucky. You likely spent $150 on the ticket.

MSU and Kentucky a little higher.

Bama and Ole Miss will be decent but no where near enough to make up what you lost on the other 5 duds.

I have five football tickets. I sell four to a guy I met on TD.com. I am not renewing my single. I will only renew if they guy that buys the four together (for the last 3 years) pays for them, otherwise I will not renew any of them for 2014.

My main reason is because I can get tickets (almost always better than mine) for free or a couple of bucks outside of the gate before the game. It's not worth paying TAF/face value.

FOUR tickets were handed to me for free at two different games when I had my fingers up trying to buy 4 for the family.

My guess would be 90-92%, but I doubt we'll get honest data on it from the Athletic Department if the renewal rate drops. I have had season tickets for 18 years (and they were my Dad's for 8 years before that), but I will probably not renew next year. I renewed this year, but sold the tickets as a package before the season started (I did manage to break even, including Tradition Fund).

Living out of state, with a family and a job, I can really only make it to two games a year (maybe three in seasons where we play at home after Thanksgiving). This year, I went to the Auburn and Arkansas games. I paid face value for two Auburn tickets ahead of time (could have gotten them for free or close to it if I had waited until game day, what with the rain), and paid $100 total for my son and me to see the Arkansas game from lower-level 25-yard line seats. If I can do that, it just doesn't make sense to buy a season ticket.

With the weak home schedule and the addition of 7000+ new seats to Tiger Stadium next year, the secondary ticket market should get really soft. Outside of Alabama and maybe Ole Miss (depending on game time and weather), every other ticket should be available on game day for less than face value.

Paying for season tickets doesn't make any sense to me. Even if you just look at is as a donation to LSU in some form or fashion, you could give all of that money to the college or program that you graduated from and then just get the dirt cheap secondary market tickets. There wasn't a game this year that was selling for face value on game day this season, never mind the tradition fund.

Ticket prices are like the price of gas: neither will ever go down & will always go up. Any season ticket that is not renewed goes straight to TAF & TAF turns right around and sells it to someone on its waiting list. And tickets sold will always matter more to the AD than butts in the stands.

I hope you aren't implying I envy rich people. That is not the case by any means.

Quick question though, why are they expanding the south end zone and only adding 3,000 regular seats? If you answer involves building suites then how can you not say the non suite ticket holders are not subsidizing the cost to build the suites? Sorry that it two questions and yes this is economics.
