To me this is one of the more underappreciated games in LSU history. State was pretty good team that year and had the inside track on winning the West going into that game.

We were down 2 touchdowns in the 4th quarter but grinded our way back into it, forced back to back 3 and outs where the stadium got as loud or as close to as loud as I think I’ve ever heard it. Ended up taking it to OT and getting the win.

It was a great win and great environment, yet it tends to het glossed over when people talk about classic games in Death Valley, which is a shame IMO.

Thanks for posting this … that entire 4th quarter was the loudest sustained crowd noise I’ve ever witnessed. Ear splitting. Unbelievable. Painful. We brought it. So awesome.

That level of 4th quarter noise topped what I remember from 97 Florida, 00 Tennessee, 03 Georgia, 07 Florida. Although 2007 Florida may have been best overall.

Terribly important, yet underated game. LSU was 4-3 and Miss St was 4-1 going into that game, and I'm pretty sure State was favored.

LSU fell behind 31-17 at one time but really fought hard to get back in the game, and win in OT.

One thing I remember about that was Toefeld's TD run in the first quarter. He appeared to let go of the ball a couple yards before crossing the goalline, yet he was awarded the TD.

If you're young, you just wouldn't understand... and that's not an insult.

Jackie Sherrill had that program in gear, in a way they haven't been since, not even with Dak. They won the West in 98, and were 10-2 in 99. In 2000, they were 8-4, with 2 OT losses (LSU and Arkansas). Lost to Texas in the bowl in 98, beat Clemson in 99, beat A&M in 2000.
They were real close to becoming an established winner, but collapsed the next 3 years to return to mediocrity.

I am old enough and yes I remember. They always seemed to have very good big men on both sides of the ball and horses for running backs.

Nearly beat Tennessee in the SEC championship game in 1998. A ton of people don’t remember that.
