I heard that the LSU vs Auburn game (played at Auburn) in 1908 was a hard fought close game. I heard that Auburn's football field was where the eagle cage is now- about 100 yards east of Jordan Hare. This is between Jordan Hare and some girls dormitories. I don't think Auburn keeps the eagle there anymore, but the cage I think is still there. I've walked there and wondered if it is true because there is no sign that there ever was a ball field there. Then again, it was 100 years ago.

Panthera Tigris,
The Auburn game of 1908, was a very hard fought game.
Great game, LSU won on two key passing plays.
I have a near complete play by play of this game, only lack the last 1-2 minutes. I hope to find the rest of the play by play at Auburn when I get a chance to go there next year.
The play by play will be in the book, and you will get to see what LSU's offense was back in those days; against a good team in a hostile arena.

Tigger, did you personally attend the game?

I think I took the over in that one

Tigger 1: I am anxiously awaiting your book. I am fascinated by this team as well as that era. Both seem to have been forgotten. Was John Heisman the Auburn coach? If so, LSU beat Auburn with Heisman's invention- the forward pass.

No John was coaching Georgia Tech at the time. His team went 6-3 in 1908 and lost 44-0 at home to the same Auburn team LSU beat 10-2 on the road.
This win by Auburn along with the win vs Georgia, was a let down to the Atlanta sports writers.

That was a tough ticket.

good stuff man
let us know when the book comes out.
I have a print on my wall that says "LSU Champions of the South: 1908"
My gf asked what "of the south meant". I told her same thing as this- pointing to a 2003 BSCNC print.

When did the last member of the 1908 team die? My guess is late 70s or early 80s. Are there any interviews on record with the player(s)? I am assuming all are deceased because they would be about 120 years old today.

Most of the members of the 1907-08 team passed away in the 1940's.
Doc Fenton lived into the mid 1960's and near 80 years old.
Doc was interviewed many times, mostly by the local sport writers when LSU went unbeaten in 1958, and Pete for his book on LSU football.
I'm having a hard time tracking down M. Lally.

It always seemed to me that if LSU would have lost that game, Auburn would have claimed the first CFB national championship by a team from the South for that same year, since their defenses put up a goose egg for every other game they played in '08. It's so strange to hear people claim Penn should get a title due to their tough schedule, when LSU's road game against Auburn was a much better quality win than anything the Quakers had, especially considering Carlisle's ugly losses to Harvard and Minnesota. And don't even get me started on Harvard's season that year. Calling Harvard a NC that year is the biggest joke of all.

I think rivals had Doc Fenton as a two star.
