Maybe I am just slow, but this tournament format appears to be really confusing. It seems like there isn't too much of an advantage to getting the bye other than the extra day of rest. Also, does the tournament turn single elimination once you reach the final 4?

Please somebody explain this thing to me.

looks like double elimination until the final game to me. if a winners bracket team goes undefeated they will appear in the championship game and it is possible they would be runner up with only one loss. that could be fixed by simply requiring a second game but if they don't i most certainly understand why with regionals coming up the following week.

It's a terrible format. Just one example of that fact is if the top seeds all advance to the next round, #4 Kentucky will have played one game against #9 Ole Miss to earn the right to play #1 LSU, while #1 LSU would will have played one game against #6 Arkansas to earn the right to play #4 Kentucky.

The top 2 seeds can win the tournament only playing 4 games (5 game max). That is the advantage. Everyone else is looking at 5 games minimum.

Unless I'm looking at the bracket incorrectly, the highest ranked winner of Games 1/2 and 3/4 will also be able to win the tournament in four games.

You are right.

The bracket is set up with the thought that the SEC tournament doesn't really matter. That is a quick way to kill any interest in the thing.

Yeah. From that stanpoint, you may have an advantage by being the 3 or 4 seed because your first game is Tuesday. Thus, your Tuesday pitchers may be able to go in the championship on Sunday.

The weirdest part is the two high seeded teams winning on Tuesday not playing again till Thursday. Doesn't make sense.

the advantages are

1 day of rest

2 play a relatively weak team in their first game (the worst winner of two of the games).

3. avoid 2 seed South Carolina and 3 Florida in the early rounds

can we get one of these threads sticky'd? there is literally 2 or 3 of these exact same threads every day....for good reason...but can we consolidate to one please?

Not really. Anyone w/ a high school education should be able to read & understand the bracket. Ok maybe I'm giving the rant too much credit.

#4 Kentucky gets a day of rest, plays a weaker team in the first round, and avoids SC and Florida in the early rounds.

I don't understand why Kentucky would get a day of rest then playing the lower seeded team

That's messed up. This format doesn't have a long shelf life

What other kind of advantage were you expecting?

It really isn't that confusing, and there is no point in being pissed about the high seed winners from day 1 getting a bye on day 2. There are 5 teams in each bracket so someone has to have a bye the second day also, and you can't give the top seed a bye two days in a row.

Some of the other alternatives are pool play and having just one single bracket double elmination tournament. Both of those formats are worse for various reasons.
