Didn’t really know where to post this, but figured the recruiting board would know more about this.

When I came up in the early 90s it was all about high school sports, and little league allstar tournaments took the stage. When/why did travel ball, camps, private leagues, and the likes bc so much more important then what high school sports were able to mean?

I live in Pennsylvania and for softball it’s been that way for about 10 to 15 years at least. Helped w coaching my daughters teams and some of the coaches kids were also on tournament teams to get noticed by college scouts.

your highschools are locked into one region facing the same teams year in and year out. they may play other schools in higher or lower divisions from time to time, but the teams play the same schools, much like conferences do. because the regions dont change, the player pool (the pool of players that each school has to work with) remains relatively unchanged, baring waiver transfers.
with travel ball and private leagues, the pool expands exponentially. top players are invited and only the best of the best play.

basically, To Be The Best You Have To Beat The Best, and you cant really do that at some rinky dink highschool out in the middle of bumfrick nowhere

This. It is now Pay to Play for a lot of sports. Travel and club sports are a huge money making endeavor.

Correct and they always have been. The downfall and trend of the dog and pony shows ruling all began when Nike/Under Armour/corporate sponsers that always drove the money began partnering with the rankings sites giving them a vested interest in the success and importance of those events. The sites overinflate their importance because it's in their best interest to do so. It's where their bread is buttered.

when they figured out that you could concentrate talent better on a few AAU teams over 400ish high schools in our state

And when they figured out that the majority of all high schools are ran by politics and good ol boys. No AAU team can be ran like that and compete

Now the high schools still have the media on their side. No one outside of the parents gives a crap about the club teams but they give a crap about Jesuit vs St Paul’s

I’m a better 14u travel baseball coach than most of the area high school coaches. Unless you go to a big name program, you won’t get proper development.

Parents have expressed this

your teammates probably won’t be good enough to play with you either.

Maybe this is anecdotal evidence but I think kids are driving further to go to HS than ever before

Well, seeing as my daughter(no pics) is 11yo, doesn’t play baseball, and is in volleyball, your shpill means zero. I’m sure in your mind you are gods gift to all the lil baws getting their rings in tournament after a travel ball tournament,

Maybe you are.. Maybe you’re the best 14u baseball coach there is. My point is; when did it become paramount that unless you are a young athlete’s parent, and have the time/monetary means to “PAY” for their child to get noticed, that it has become the standard?

The live period used to be in July only when AAU was being played instead of HS that usually shuts down summer league at the end of June.

In baseball, your physical "stats", trump your game stats for high school players trying to make it to the next level. Exit velocity, bat speed, speed you can throw a ball from across the infield or outfield, and time to first base out of the box are far more important than your batting average. Your batting average can be average but if you are in a certain percentile in the categories I mentioned above, someone will give you a shot.

When someone figured out the money to be made

1999-2000 travel ball started being pushed pretty hard.

Now have 7-8 yr old travel ball killing rec ball.

My only issue is once travel ball starts, they don’t practice to improve skills and pick up bad habits during a 6 month season.
