but I don't know of any programs who can recruit 2 5* QB's in the same year.

shep wasn't a QB for UT and they pressured him into a quick decision on that issue. he declined to commit

i dont' think they gave up, but when he quickly committed to LSU they didn't really put forth a lot of resources tog et him

The reason that Shep didn't go to UT was not because of pressure, it was because they didn't want him as a QB and he wanted a school that at least gave him the opportunity to compete for the QB position.

The reason they didn't pursue him was because they knew that they had no chance to land him as long as Gilbert was on board with them.

No, the reason they lost Shep is because his girlfriend was already a student at LSU. That is the only reason he committed so early in the process.

they have no problem recruiting 2 QBs in teh same class (RP and colt, for example)

Seems ironic now but originally LSU had a verbal from Colt McCoy and Texas had a verbal from RP

Late in the game of course LSU sniped RP, Colt then went to Texas instead... seems clear who got the better of that trade now

Could be true...

One coach on the staff told a buddy of mine that at time they wished they would have waited on a kid. Sometimes they want to wrap it up fast, too fast.

This guy got it right. Nobody will sign 2 5 star Qb's not even USC.

I dont think Texas was a good fit for Shep either way..Gilbert fits the Offence way better

he was a verbal commit to LSU I believe.... he thought he was the only QB LSU was going to get that year and when RP switched over to LSU he changed to Texas

no

colt was always committed to UT and only UT

it became a rant legend that since UT got RP, we'd get their committed QB. that's 100% wrong. he was always 100% UT

this is true- every year, there are 2 to 3 big, big time recruits that UT misses out on b/c of this strategy

some of these kids dont come into their own until their senior season

I think Mack's approach is both beneficial and backfires at the same time

Well, in all fairness, it would be hard to blame last year on Mack Brown. Especially, a fanbase whose second MNC was lucked into with a team with two losses, one incredibly late in the process.

Back then Dandy was the main source I checked and I am pretty sure at least he had Colt as a verbal to us. Obviously that doesn't make it so.

Yea because Texas wouldn't know what to do with a running QB.

There was another thread on this a while back... someone linked some info from a prime site as things went to the wire on signing day

I think i really said it wrong as i read my earlier post (the word original as i used it is at least unclear)... colt was supposedly going to switch over to LSU were RP to have indeed followed through and committed to Texas

This is not to say that if everything else were equal Colt would not have preferred to play for texas

Hey Will, is your cousin gonna make it to the LSU camp? You think he'll commit to LSU if offered, since Texas hasn't yet?

McCoy was supposed to visit LSU sometime in the last few weeks before signing day but cancelled, and LSU fans have somehow turned that into him being an LSU commit until RP switched. Here is the relevant part from Scarbarough's Jan. 21, 2004 warroom -

quote:

*** As reported on TigerBait.com last night, Texas’ other quarterback commitment Colt McCoy is also visiting LSU on the last weekend of the month. I do believe that Perrilloux is going to sign with LSU but if he does not, I believe that McCoy will have LSU paperwork and it’s possible he would then sign with the Tigers. I think it’s probable that Texas does not sign both Perrilloux and McCoy. One will be at LSU and the other will be at Texas.

***
