Alexander was hampered by injuries most of his career at LSU and never did reach his full potiential. Al Woods signed with LSU as a highly touted prospect but never did reach his potential either.

From Dandy Don.

Are the coaches misjudging talent, or are these guys not being coached up?

Woods being so big was never a great fit for our system, but I think he was probably overrated all along. He was a huge strong kid playing in a small classification that probably made him look better than he really was.

Alexander just had so many injuries.

ETA: And I agree with DBG below, not all great prospects work out, it happens at every school.

Well I don't think it's misjudged talent, every school in the country would have taken alexander and woods

just doesn't work out sometimes

he was a 5 star on rivals and from La. Our coaches are actually great at judging talent. But you don't pass on a 5 star DT from your own backyard.

Alexander in his prime in 2007 was ridiculous. We dominated up until South Carolina with him in the lineup. It was scary the stats we were putting up.........then the wheels fell off. Charles Alexander in his prime could handle his business.

Al Woods never played with a pad level and meanstreak someone needs to play with at 6 4 300+ in the interior. He had moments but never was relentless.

Both made plays in their time that made you say wow he could play in the SEC so this isn't a trend.....

I was always impressed with LSU on 4th down in goaline. We stood tall on many runs this year with those guys in the trenches.

Maybe they didn't want Shurbutt (or what's his name) to keep talking about the one that "got away" in La.

Black and Lafell had good careers at LSU.

During our NC year...Alexander was turning into a very good DT before his injury. After that injury...he really started to slow down...

Like someone said above...Woods might have been overrated because of his classification. I remember him throwing 170lb kids around. Davenport might follow that mold too...but the good thing about Davenport is he dominated top competition in camps. I'm not sure Woods ever did that...

alexander... injuries just sometime cant be avoided. maybe he didnt stretch enough?

woods i think played behind some talent but maybe he never showed the work ethic? sometimes when it looks like a guy is not "coached" up maybe he was lazy and never put forth the effort to get on the field. i am not saying this is the case, but not all the blame should be put on the coaches all the time. maybe the coaches never lit the fire under his butt to make him want to get on the field?

there are tons of reasons that highly rated talent does not produce.

Woods played under Dorsey and Jackson. Had Pelini coaching him when he was young and a year under Chavis.

But yeah, it's Les Miles fault he didn't produce

I am nit saying this is a 100% true, but I heard the guys behind Chevis and Daniels(I think it was him) had their long term CB duties so locked up the guys behind them weren't really putting out as hard as they probably could to challenge them.

If that is true it could be a reason the secondary seemed to underachieve in '08.

Other teams play dirty.Auburn went after Dorsey purposely. He was able to play through and recover. They hurt him on purpose. Could have happended to these guys as well.

Woods' performance the week of practice at the Army All-American Game and in the game itself was less than stellar, especially compared to Gerald McCoy's performance. I remember the biggest knock on Woods from the practice evaluations being that he was extremely slow and less than dominating. These evaluations caused quite a stir on this site and his performance that week seems to have been a sign of his performance the last four years. Which IMO indicates that the recruiting sites were off base in the rankings of Al Woods. While Stars are pretty, they are no indication of actual performance.

Neither of these two were athletic as they were rated. Woods for example is the most over rated DL prospect we have had in 10 years.

Al Woods should have been moved to the OL.

They were overrated coming out of High School, but both of them were serviceable DTs. I don't think our coaching staff misjudged their talent (recruiting sites may have), they both came to LSU and played quite a bit. Not everyone we recruit is going to be a superstar.

I like how you present 2 alternatives both of which would be miles' fault.

The most unfortunate trend I have noticed lately is the propensity of people who claim to be LSU fans coming on our recruiting board and posting their negative thoughts.
