I know players commit ridiculously early in basketball, but I think that we'll be really good for the 2011-2012 season and that will make LSU an even more attractive choice for players of Gathers caliber.

I saw Rico play last night against St. Aug and he didn't impress me all that much. My lil' cousin who's a freshman this year, Craig Victor, pretty much owned him in this game and shut Rico down.

Yes, I agree Rico is a tremendous athlete and can jump out the gym, but he has an adequate jumper at best and really doesn't have good ball handling skills. In college he'll have to play the 2 or 3 and from what I've seen he's somewhat underskilled for the 2 or 3.

I hope I'm not breaking any rules, but I graduated from Riverside Academy as part of the class of 2009, and my best friend graduated from RA in 2010. We both played basketball and he stayed on the team during the summer the whole Reserve Christian movement happened. During that time he became pretty good friends with Rico.

Now take this for what it's worth, but he's told me that Rico told him that the top 5 players in the state in 2012 want to ply college ball together at LSU, since they've been playing AAU ball together for a while.

I'm guessing from your comment about Rico having to play the 2 or 3 that he's not as tall as advertised. How big did he look in your estimation?

That's pretty much been the scouting report on him from day 1. Great athlete, not a lot of basketball skill. I hope he comes to LSU and I'm excited at the possibility, but I don't think he is a "program saver" or anything like that. I think his biggest benefit to LSU, at least early on, is from a PR standpoint. It puts LSU back on the radar of the other top Louisiana players.

They list him at 6'7" but I'm 6'4 1/2" and when I spoke to him and shook hands with him I was damn near staring him straight in the eye. As far as girth, he is very big and strong. My analysis of him is basically due to his skill level and not his size.

Unless he grows a few inches or refine his shooting and ball handling he'll be an undersized 4 in college like Tasmin Mitchell, but Taz could shoot the ball that's the big difference.

I see. Yeah, Tas was a special kind of player and I think as time goes on people will look back on him fondly for his versatility and skill level.

Thanks for the report, and best of luck to Craig with the season.

I've been to that campus....there is absolutely nothing to like about it. Weird choice.....

LSU campus has been referred to as 'Berkley on the Bayou'. Perspective - not everyone has the same.

Ricardo Gathers youtube video

Dude has hops with power dunks, and shotblocking ability, but he doesn't have the quicks of a 2 or 3, imo. In his rivals film, he doesn't show any ball-handling skills. Looks like a center trying to dribble. It's like he's an athletic power forward in a 6-6, 230 body.

Reminds me somewhat of Ohio St Jim Jackson out of high school (circa 1989) in that he lumbered a bit much for a SG but back then I think Jackson had a bit more range than 10 feet and could handle the ball competently.

Both had 15 pts in the game. Felix will be a very good college player. He has solid ball handling, can shoot off the dribble, and can easily create his own shot. He reminds me of DJ Augustine that played for Brother Martin a few years back. If you look on the thread for Craig Victor I gave a brief synopsis of his play in the game.

No doubt. JJ had the tools,

Jim Jackson HS video

Yeah, the comparison is mainly for the physical build, below-average 2G quicks, and the dunks/inside game, (not JJ's ball-handling/passes/outside shots.)

I have no doubt that Gathers isn't 6'7" but so what. We've had guys like Glen and Bass that were never as tell as reported. I think Gathers is athletic enough and quick enough off the jump that he could be a really really good college player.

Both of these guys had a decent jump shot. Gathers can't shoot the ball at all nor can he handle the ball well enough to create a shot off the dribble.

What he does in high school will not translate well in college. He basically try to overpower defenders, but when he was put up against people who could bang with him down low he struggled greatly...as he did against St. Aug last night.

Over time. Glen came in with a better jumpshot than Bass, but he wasn't exactly automatic. Both improved. I've seen highlights of Gathers making jumpshots and have no doubt that will improve. But he's quicker than Glen, more solid than Glen, and much better defensively than Glen. He's a bigger, quicker Bass IMO. Glen had a better offensive game than both, but has never played above the rim. Bass did, and Gathers has that ability and more above the rim.

I agree. He's got his weaknesses, but he's only a junior. He will improve.

I think O'Bryant is a much better prospect, but didnt get near the press around here that Gathers will if he commits, because he's from out of state.

I still think Gathers will be a 4, hopefully play behind JOB for a couple and then take over.

Cal also has a very good coach that can recruit.Mike Montgomery. For those that remember those Stanford teams that were ranked top 5 for about 3-4 years,he was the coach.
