Why do we tend to close strong in recruiting. Quite often it appears that many programs have filled their commitment quota early. We tend to bring it strong in the end. I'm wondering if we do this by design or it just falls like this.

This year it was due to the late additions of O and Steele. I've always thought it was just tenacity by the staff. Also Les doesn't like kids taking visits after committing, so he likely tells them to get it out of their system before choosing. On top of that, ESPN has a lot to do with it as well as the AAA game. Kids vow to commit during these games a year ahead of time.

Chavis probably had a lot to do with that. He didn't recruit until january

The better players tend to commit later?

Honestly I think a lot of our finishing success has to do with January being the prime month for in home visits. Our staff does a great job in home especially Frank and Les. Les is a homerun with parents on in home visits.

A lot of times coaches don't want too many early commitments, because they want to make sure they have the numbers if they pull the rabbit out of the hat and land a big recruit at the end. Its a numbers game all the way up until the end. Some years are more certain then others, but sometimes programs will start scrambling to see who is still available on their boards.

Some truth to this but why does Bama have 23 hard commits in October when we have 15-16?

I'm not complaining as it's fun at the end but very nerve racking...

I would say part of the reason is Bama having less concern over turning kids away later (grey shirts, etc). They don't do it as much as we LSU fans like to think they do, but it's definitely a different mindset.

And at the end of the day, you can see LSU's policy of not turning away in-state kids if offered in the offers given out. Miles/Wilson will be much more liberal in their offers to OOS kids while offers for LA kids aren't as numerous. But if an in-state recruit is offered, almost all the time it's commitable and if there's a number problem more than likely the OOS kid will get the "sorry, but..." phone call.

No, Bama fills their quota early. THat's the only program that does so on a regular basis.

Typically we sit around 18 and know most others with a degree of certainty.

That's actually really good come January.

Interesting that with these comments about the Bama early commits, saw yesterday that Saban wants to slow it down this year and not take so many early commits. Wants to hold off on some fringe kids and continue evaling and going for the kids they really want.

I like the way we do it. Think some years(like 14 and this year) our staff would prefer to get kids committed early but overall they do tend to pick the guys they want and wait them out. After that they hone in on the next wave and grab those. I like it. These days the early commit is so meaningless that they are just fan fodder anyway. Still have yo recruit them like they aren't committed.

So it appears based on the answers that it is strategy. I do believe it is smart because a lot of kids develop late. Not sure but i think we recruited Foster Moreau after his HS season was over.
