Question about Jerez Parks

You know the story. Jerez Parks is a 4 star DE that remained uncommitted and then wanted to sign with Bama on NSD. Bama told him they did not have room for him to sign in this class but he has agreed to greyshirt.

When you greyshirt, do you sign papers of some sort that binds you to that school? Or can a school like LSU swoop in and add him to this class? The idea of being immediately on scholarship might be tempting for him.

Dont sign a LOI I believe. It's like you basically are a walk on until you go on scholarship following year.

If it was tempting for him then he would have signed with another school on NSD.

He has to enroll first. Before he does that he can go anywhere he is offered. Once is enrolls, paying his own way, he can get a Bama offer at some point.

It was my understanding he did not know until NSD. If true, he would not have time to sign with another school on NSD and he may have had a knee jerk reaction to agree to greyshirt with Bama. But that may change once he and his family have had a few days to think about it.

CEO mentioned there was a possibility to still add to this class. Maybe Parks is a possibility.

If he is a true greyshirt and not a walkon, then there is nothing that binds him. A greyshirt delays full time enrollment until the spring and is an EE whose eligibility clock doesn't start until the next season. He actually can attend school in the fall on his own dime and as long as it is not full time his clock doesn't start and he isn't committed. Also he can't be part of the team in any way.

It is almost unheard of for a 4 star to greyshirt. It just seems that a school can get in his ear and tell him that he is Plan B at Bama and convince him to sign and be on full scholarship in the fall.

He's a cuck if he actually enrolls at Bama. With that said, no way he's actually paying his own way if he does.

So, does he then count toward the 27 for 2018, or do they conveniently bypass that and he only counts toward the scholly limit?

It's a greyshirt with a "wink" "wink".

Him and his family are not paying tuition and other expenses. Bama handlers are doing that so it's equivalent to a scholarship from Jerez's POV.

You're not even a walk-on. Parks can't play, can't practice, or receive scholarship until January 2018. He will have to pay his own way in the Fall.

I really hope somebody is smart enough to try and talk some sense into this kid.

He is taking a HUGE risk by Gray shirting.

1. He's sitting out an entire year.

2. What if Bama lands some big time DEs again next year? They pulled the plug on him once. What would stop them from doing it again?

I understand wanting to play for Bama and all that jazz, but he's risking a whole lot to maybe get that chance a year from now. He could literally go to almost any other college and a full ride scholarship. Hopefully he realizes he is risking his future by sticking with alabama.

...and still might not if they do what they did this year with so many 4 and 5 star recruits being signed. It's possible he might be a forgotten athlete during the 2017-2018 season due to the next big thing at his position.

He's sitting out a football season. Not a full year.

Greyshirting is not a risk. He will be enrolled and on scholarship before signing day next year.

Just wondering why other schools including LSU does not go after him and add him to this year's class.

The pitch would be that he does not have to pay for school this fall and that apparently Bama would rather put others on scholarship now instead of him.

Unless a few players better than him come along by next signing period, IMO. Alabama's numbers will be limited next year because they over-signed this year. If he was so valued, why not blue-shirt him and let one of the other players that got offered a blue-shirt take the grey-shirt. A center and a kicker who also can't play this year got the blue-shirts, but at least they're on scholarship and can practice (i.e. be a part of the team). He should know where he stands in terms of value just by that alone.
