Looking at previous classes, last year was by far the biggest we’ve taken in the past few years.

With likely losing 4 starters off this upcoming season’s team, what are people’s thoughts on how many we take (recruit or portal) to ensure we keep our depth?

What’s folks dream scenario in terms of who we reel in?

It probably just depends on who it is. In 2024, we had 5 but then made room for Echols when he wanted in because of the caliber player he is.

Since we took 6 in 2024, I’d say we could get by with 4 good ones in 2025 if we wanted to load up at another position, like DT.

Should take four or five every year. How many we lose has nothing to do with it, since the freshmen won’t be ready to play, with an occasional exception. If you don’t have enough two-deep that is for the portal to correct, not the freshmen class.

Always take 4/5 due to the portal. You never know who develops, who doesn’t, who leaves, who stays.

Like most have said, 4-5. The portal and no limits keep the numbers fluid always. Coaches #s per position will change several times as the year progresses due to who develops(draft/depth), who doesn't(recruit over them) and NIL/depth chart issues(Heard/Ryan;one left and the other's offer was met enough to stay). All while recognizing immediate needs to balance the portal and stay under 85. Only enviable part of a major college football staff is the paychecks.

Agreed with what you’re all saying re: 4-5, and that’s all the pay sites talk about to.

Besides the guys we have onboard already, what’s the wishlist? Debose, Fasusi?

4-5 OL every year.

On OL you need 5 starters, at least 3-4 backups who could start and 4-5 developing or waiting their turn to back up or start. That’s 13-14 high caliber players evey year. Perfect!

I’d say knock one number off for the DL. So 3-4 every year. 4 starters 3-4 backups who could start and 3-4 waiting so 11-12 every year for the DL. Perfect! That’s 25% of your team but the most important positions to have filled.

You need 3-4 QBs, 4-5 RBs, 12-15 WRs, 12-15 DBs, 6-8 LBs and 5-6 DEs. About 3-4 TEs and you have a team. The problem is keeping these numbers and having quality players throughout those numbers. Really we should have plenty of players with 85 limit.

Right. Teams generally aim at 15 scholarship players for the offensive line.

Brett Bordelon and Devin Harper are a great start especially with the interior. I’m sure Brett is penciled in at the future center spot and Devin could play either guard spot. Darius Afalava Is another interior lineman from Utah with some positive vibes.

Dramodd Odoms (Houston), Micah DeBose (Mobile), Lamont Rogers (Misquote) and Carius Curne (Arkansas) are all top 300 offensive tackles with serious interest with the tigers and I’m guessing Rogers is the biggest lean.

I’d guess (1) center, (1-2) interior and (2) tackles…. 4 max 5

With Coach Davis and Kelly, OL will always be the least of our worries! What those two have done in such a short timeframe, unreal. A continuation of riches!

This was the way to look at the roster and signing classes before the rules change. And in “normal times” this is still the case. However, if one specific position group loses multiple kids to the portal, those numbers will be adjusted accordingly.

Bottom line is that managing rosters over time are a bigger hassle than it used to be.
