At some point you have to start building up your recruiting classes

Unfortunately, those guys don’t stick around long. LSU signed 4 guys last season. 2 are already gone. It wouldn’t surprise if by next season 3 of those initial 4 are out (either via transfer or deciding to turn pro…even if they are unlikely to be a draft pick).

McMahon talked about wanting to get “older” this season. I can tell you directly from someone in the locker room last season there were personality issues and some guys who left that the staff weren’t terribly upset to see go.

This team has 6 seniors. The hope is with more maturity comes better team chemistry. The plan my not always be reliant on transfer upperclassmen. But the reality of college basketball today is transfer recruiting is every bit as important as HS recruiting (maybe more). The days of signing and stacking HS classes are over

3 cycles? Damn... you guys really did set the bar low for him. NIL/transfer portal exists. Guy is a bum

guess the problem I have is that we should have kept Wade

the free market proved Will Wade's current worth. You guys are nutty as hell over this man. No one wants to touch him, but you want him as your coach. Lol

Yeah! Some fans enjoy watching LSU win and compete. Some like to point fingers and bitch, as soon as there is a bump in the road.
Basketball fans, over my lifetime, have had very little to cheer about. We have had several individual stars, that kept us entertained but there was always a weakness that kept us from staying relevant.
As soon as there was bump, fire the coach. He's Bum.

the ratings of the recruits listed are not 1 and done.
its still possible to build a team. we're about to find out. lay a foundation. they arent signed. even if the 4 best sign it will.not be a top.8 class.
i liked. wades xavier team but he never did that at LSU.

Lester I keep going back and forth whether you are stupid or just trolling constantly. I'm sure I'm not alone in wondering that on the board.

We clearly had in Wade a coach that would have us in the hunt yearly, and instead of standing up to the NCAA which has been shown to be effective many times in recent years by other schools, we bend over and take it by firing Wade. I've posted before that I think woody was throwing his homeboy Emmert a life raft as he was drowning in his incompetence running the NCAA by firing Wade.

Do you honestly think Wade won't be back in a power 5 job in short order? Once he cools off from the heat attached to his name? The bottom line is we should have kept his arse, and worked out a "slap on the wrist" punishment with the NCAA, like you know the name brand schools WITH BALLS DO.

You say me and others are nutty over this man. I'm nutty over LSU basketball winning, and that's what we were doing, and would have continued to do with Wade. You laugh at an LSU fan wanting to keep him. So you are happy with McMahon instead of Wade?????

What in the hell are you losing your mind about? I said there were some guys the staff WERE NOT upset to see go. Nowhere did I criticize McMahon, or say he should have kept anyone.

Perhaps calm down and try reading first before reflexively freaking out in response to criticism that doesn’t exist.

Why does every discussion of players/recruits have to devolve into a rant about Wade? I swear some posters here need to go ahead and complete their transition to a woman because they can’t seem to let things stay in the past.

If we put together a good HS recruiting class, look well coached, and go .500 in the SEC I'll feel we're on our way to be a very good program. That's my realistic hope for this season.

Basketball now is such a year-to-year game with so much roster turnover that it is difficult to think the present suggests success for the future.

McMahon's first HS class was really pretty good. That was the most encouraging thing going into last year considering he put that class together kind of on the fly amidst uncertainty. Unfortunately, 1/2 of that class is gone now (though the two "headliners" are still here). That means it's just hard to primarily build through HS recruiting.

LSU has 6 guys listed as seniors on this roster (Wright, Wilkinson, Dean, Baker, Hannibal, Fountain). I don't know who has any "covid" eligibility left (if any), but that amount of seniors seems to suggest next year's roster will be another large overhaul. IMO, he probably has/wants to sign around 3 HS players.

That doesn't sound like a lot, but McMahon spoke several times this offseason about wanting to get "older" compared to last season. You can't do that if over half of your roster is 1st and 2nd year guys. To me, that means he still wants to recruit transfers heavily and rely on those guys while the young players develop and hopefully stick around.

It sounds like McMahon wants to sign 4 HS players this cycle and he and the staff are going for top 100 talent while they’re at it. Whether they’re able to land that talent is a big question.

I think the portal will be a big tool for LSU again as we look towards the ‘24 roster.

You need a couple of talented "program" guys in each class that stick around and provide program stability. I also feel if he is able to recruit well from the HS ranks, that gives me confidence in his ability in general to not only fix but maintain the program.

So to reiterate, if he signs a good high school class, the team looks well coached, and we go ~.500 in the SEC, I'll have a lot of confidence we are on the track to being a consistently strong program. That doesn't mean I don't recognize the importance of the transfer portal.

Last year we really didn't seem well-coached later in the year and the team looked downright disinterested in winning most of the time.

So 13 roster spots:

Any given season, something like 8 HS recruits (3 FR, 2 SO, 2 JR, 1 SR), 5 high impact transfers.

Yep talked to coach last week. We’ll be cooking for some stars this year. He’s very confident the message is resonating with the kids we’re going after .

This recruiting class seems like it will be very important for the McMahon era.
