I see a lot of posts blaming Miles for our recruiting struggles at the OT position. Do these posts have any merit, or does Grimes deserve some blame?

Also, what is the status of Willie Allen? Isn't he supposed to be a project of an OT?

Freshman offensive tackle Willie Allen has shed his gold jersey, which signifies limited contact for a player normally recovering from an injury. Allen missed the 2016 season and is expected to redshirt after a leg injury in preseason camp. The John Curtis product practiced for the first time since August on Thursday and wore a gold jersey during Friday’s practice.

Grimes is better off now on the field and with recruiting.

OT is something that can and should be coached up. You can't coach skill. OT you recruit size and strength and coach them fundamentals. They're not being coached correctly...

The difference between our OL and Bama's OL is not the quality of instruction. It's the fact they they have 5 stars and we have 3/4 stars.

Supposedly Coach Miles liked to recruit from the inside out when it came to his offensive linemen, from what I've heard on the sports talk media. He emphasized getting a center and guards first, and not so much on tackles, at least in the last few years. This is according to Mike D. And apparently, Coach O is looking to change that in trying to recruit more true tackle types to play on the edge, and not guys who are more suited at the guard positions. I think this has a ring of truth, because LSU has had trouble against teams with good edge rushers, like Alabama.

I agree with this. Saban has been out-recruiting LSU at the O-line positions, getting superior quality especially at the tackle positions. Hopefully Coach O and Company can start changing the equation on this soon.

I don't think our OT's have been as bad or even as mediocre as some think in the Miles era. Here's the LT's (less '12 when Faulk was hurt):

'05 - Whitworth (phenomenal player; an all-time great)
'06 -'09 - Ciron (great career, but injured before NFL career)
'10 - Barksdale (ok at LT; still in the NFL)
'11 - Faulk (very good talent but unfortunately injured)
'13-'14 La'el (great player)
'15 - Hawkins (not great, but not bad either)
'16 - Malone (similar to Hawkins but he improved a lot over the year)

You have a valid point, but wasn't Whitworth recruited by Saban before he left? Not sure, but thought he did.

yes, Whitworth was a Saban recruit.

I included him but only to point out that out track record at LT has been pretty good. All of those guys except Ciron and Faulk (and obviously Malone) are in the NFL. Both Ciron and Chris were projected to be high draft picks before injuries.

You make a good point. I won't say Miles' track record at offensive tackle wasn't pretty good overall, but since La'el Collins left, it seems the quality there has slipped. It was noticeable when LSU had to go up against teams with really good speed rushers on the edge. I could be wrong.

We have consistently matched up against Bama at every position, save for QB, OL, and LB. Compare our OT's to Bama's.

Whittworth was a Saban reecruit
Ciron - good not great
Barsdale - good not great
Faulk -could have been really could unfortunately we don't know
La'el - better suited as a guard
Hawkins - was above average
Malone - average

I would say that is underwhelming and OL is the main reason for LSUs woes against Bama.

Agreed. And the difference between LSU and Alabama at the QB position has been huge for years. I would even go so far as to say that disadvantage for LSU has outweighed the disparity at offensive line ever since 2008 when competing against Alabama. Saban has had marvelous success in recruiting and developing quarterbacks.

LSU has to overcome a regional disadvantage in recruiting at the OT position. For instance, in the 2018 class, there isn't a single OT from Louisiana who qualifies as a 2 star, a 3 star, a 4 star, or a 5 star. Also, of LA'a top 63 players for 2018, zero are OT's.

Ciron was better than good. After '08 he was generally included with Andre Smith (Bama) and Oher (OM) as the three best LT's in CFB.

Ciron chose to play his senior season but played hurt all year and is now the poster child for "leave early. "

La'el may be better suited at guard but that doesn't mean he wasn't a good LT. Both he and Ciron won the Jacobs trophy (top SEC OL).

This is pretty disconcerting. Good grief.
