Let's talk 2014 defensive tackles

I saw a thread a week or so ago discussing the DL as a whole, but I can't find it. Seemed to be a lot of different names thrown around as the 2014 targets at DT.
Stickied thread lists Khairi Clark and Travonte Valentine as the only two offers, both OOS guys. Who else is on the radar and what's the outlook?

I think josh Frazier (Springdale AR) has some serious interest in us.

DT seems to be the dark hole for this upcoming class in terms of availability and interest. I am of the opinion that we need two good DT recruits every single year. Even though we signed Gilmore, Bain, and Lacouture I would still like to see us sign two for 2014.

I think you are going to see us take 2 true DE's in the likes of Godchaux and Clark and were still on others. Willis III might start at SDE but after another year in high school and a year at LSU, expect him to move inside and play a very athletic DT around 295 300 LB. We will probably take McDowell as well and if a top DT wants in im sure we will make him fit somewhere, but after last years haul on the Dline and the possibility of what this class would be dont be surprised to see McDowell, Willis III, Clark, and Godchaux as you only D-lineman this year.

What do you all think of Garrald McDowell? His film looks good and I love the highlight of him running strive for strive with the kickoff returner!

Nah. Willis is DE all the way.

Showing good ambition on that play.
To the other poster, I don't know if I agree with LSU only taking 4 on the DL this class. Been a lot of buzz at DE.

Just seems to be a lot of guys showing/receiving interest, and the position is a cornerstone of our scheme so the staff always seems to make room for them every year.
From what I can gather Willis, Godchaux, and Deondre Clark are all takes with several other top 40 DEs in and out of LA listing LSU as an interest.

Some other guys who don't have offers, but are or may be evaluated by the staff include:
In-state:
Joyan Williams
Deldrick Canty
Jalen Graves
OJ Smith
Out-of-state:
Trey Lealaimatafo
Like someone else said, looks like Willis might grow into a gap-penetrating DT. He and someone like Valentine or K. Clark out of Florida would be a great DT tandem for 2014. Also, instate, there's McDowell, who's already been mentioned. Not sure if Godchaux is a DE or grows into a DT later.

We always take more DEs than DTs, because we can grow these guys bigger, and also because Chavis wants agile, athletic DTs; he doesn't want fat slobs to just clog space.
For example, when I watch Godchaux's highlights, I can't picture him as a DE for us, but I can see him as a DT.

Thank you! I was beginning to feel alone in the world. Idiocracy rising!
Drunkentigah, I went back and read your post. Full credit on that one!

True, I don't have access to much of the film on these guys so I was hoping for this kind of insight. DT numbers aren't thin enough to be worried right now, but freak is gone after this year and if one or two guys don't pan out I'll be nervous.

Agree that DT recruiting is a bit puzzling right now because there just aren't many on the board currently but the staff is still evaluating and will use the spring to really figure out which guys they want to target.
Another question is, even though both are being recruited at DE, where does the staff project Willis and Godchaux? Both have the frames to eventually be DTs and we know that Brick loves big DEs that have the quickness and athleticism to be near an elite level for a DT.
Word is that the staff wants 5-6 DL so there will definitely be some guys come onto the radar. Who knows who those guys may be. One issue I do have, though small, is that our slowness in this regard with DT evals has gotten us behind the eightball with the studs in GA this year. I know GA is hit hard by the Bama's, UF's, Clemson's, FSU's and Auburn's of the world and now OSU is really prioritizing the state but we have to get a bigger precense there. Way too much talent flowing out of that state for us to not try and get in on it more.

Willis is like 3" shorter than Brockers

Yea, Brockers was a giant beast in size.
If this is indeed the case, then a couple of DTs will be marked for this class as I don't see us taking more than 3-4 DEs at most.
