What's the deal with this kid? He has a strong offer list. I know there was some discussion that he wanted to play RB instead of receiver. Is he a priority for us?

We like him. It is my understanding that he is TAMU to lose.

It would be awesome if one of our young QBS would start to shine. Does wonders for recruiting kids on offensive side of ball, i.e. Manziel, Winston

Think it's the opposite. He wants to play receiver, not running back.

He's primarily looking at schools that run spread offenses: A&M, Auburn, Oregon, etc.

He's wide open. Good kid from a good family that will make several visits. He has no issues leaving the state and I've heard Oregon is a school he's excited about. I've heard a lot of different schools though. LSU is in the mix. He's not going to be a rb. He does line up at rb a fair amount, but he is not the top rb on Destrehan. He's a special athlete though. He makes huge game changing plays from multiple positions.

By the way, Will Matthews is the rb for Destrehan and is pound for pound the most underrated football player in the state. He does not have the measureables that people will drool over, but he can ball.

He would make an impact at LSU at multiple positions. He would be a first round pick at cb with our coaching.

He's a priority, but I wouldn't get my hopes up for Merritt. He could be an interesting DB project at LSU. Not sure he'd love that though.

His dad basically begged for an lsu offer just so they could be disinterested.

No begging needs to be done for a kid that lights up the sparq event. Believe what you want, but he was bound to get an offer as soon as they saw him in person.

bullshite. His dad posted on this board to get LSU to look at his son. He kept posting until he got the offer.

Then he gets the offer and now has no interest in LSU nor has his dad came and gave us an update. This is an LSU Recruiting Board. All other shite doesn't matter to us.

Saw him for the first time in person last night. Merritt looked much bigger than I'd thought he'd be he's listed at what 5'11 206, he looks more 5'11-6'0 210-215. To me he's built like a RB, moves like a RB, and looked to be more into the game when he was a RB.

Once he gets into a college weight room he's only going to get bigger. I think he ends up as 220-225 lb back who catches a ton of balls out the backfield.

I agree, he has to be a grade risk or something to only have small schools looking at him. He's short 5'9/5'10 but he's not small 200+ lbs. He just doesn't have top end speed but he's Destrehan's workhorse.

would love to see him playing safety at LSU or would be an amazing LB at 230lbs.

This board needs to atop projecting players like him at every position. We have safeties and do not need undersized lb'ers...much leas a project there.

I'm sure he's a great talent but we are very solid at safety and rb for the foreseeable future.

In case you live under a rock, we don't run the spread and don't throw much to the rb's.

Thanks message board mall cop!

The nerve of people on this board to speculate about what position a recruit will play once they get to college and grow for 3-4 years. Don't they know that whatever position rivals projects you at or whatever position you play in high school you're stuck playing that position forever.

We have safeties

Yep cause you never see guys who played WR in high school switch to safety. I'm looking at you Ricky Jefferson, ironically also from Destrehan.

Merritt is the size of LSU safeties right now, after a few years in a college weight room he could easily be bulked up to the size of LSU's OLB's (Louis, Jones, Fiest, Alexander). Not denying he would be a project, and I don't think that would be his best position.

Great talent gets passed up by greater talent all the time. I guess you would have us stop recruiting great talent because you're comfortable with the talent we already have? Let's just recruit backups for those guys until they're gone right? Just because a position might not be of need doesn't mean you don't recruit an elite athlete (from the heart of your recruiting base) that may play one of those positions. You can never have to much talent.

Who the hell said we do? That's probably the reason this kid is looking around. With the log jam at RB and the way the backs are used here he may see himself projecting better at another school in a different offense. That doesn't change the fact that this kid is an elite athlete that can play multiple positions on the next level so you recruit him.
