The governor's suspension of TOPS could cripple LSU's baseball recruiting. MLB pays 100% of college. There are several guys that were planning on coming to LSU that would reconsider if this suspension isn't lifted.

Now I think it's all just scare tactics by JBE so he can raise taxes with less resistance. I don't think he follows through, but I'm just passing along what I've been told.

That would hurt bad. When will people learn to never vote for a democrat even if the other guy sucks too.

The 900M hole that needs to be plugged in 4 months and 2B hole for next year is the result of a governor who has been in office 30 days?

So, the Republican who actually destroyed the state gets no blame? Idiots like you are what's wrong with this state.

When the new governor lifts the part time work requirements for welfare and then threatens to cut TOPS, that's democratic way!

No, the fact that this Dem Gov wants to cut TOPS and hand out food stamps and Medicaid and welfare to lazy people who don't even have to look for a job or get drug tested to get the benefits is the problem.....according to Kennedy there are huge areas to be cut from handouts and pork that would make it unnecessary to touch TOPS, but JBE wants to keep the pork. Education is the way out of a lot of our State's issues, not the place to cut. Make the standards tougher, but do not end it altogether. Just ridiculous.

We could stop giving welfare benefits to illegals as well. That would help.

While Jindal obviously should shoulder blame, your boy JBE voted for every budget deal.... So check yourself. And to top it off his first act as Gov is to raise taxes, cut TOPS, and threaten LSU athletics.....
You and him can both go kick rocks
You'll get what you asked for

Edwards is a lying a-hole. He ran a campaign of no taxes then proposes the biggest tax increase in Louisiana history. When will people learn not to trust Democrats. Their cronies aren't in the proposed cuts, but Louisiana citizens are. Business as usual at the expense of Louisiana Universities.

Think we can all agree on this. It's a damn shame what has been done to higher ed in the state of Louisiana over the last 5 or so years.

Cutting TOPS is a mistake. We struggle to keep good students in Louisiana regardless, now we wont.

If you wanna talk cutting hand outs, we can get down on that, and save a shite load more than TOPS would provide, but we wont. God forbid the anybody work for what they get right???? But we who do will continue to pay for the ignorance and bullshite.
Instead of cutting off giving money to everyone whos sitting on their arse, lets cut kids best hope of going to college.... sounds great right?

Do you care to list what he did to destroy the state?

I'm not saying he's infallible, nor am I laying the blame squarely at the feet of JBE, but he's had a very active 30 days in office thus far - Medicaid expansion and raises for his staff were the first things on the agenda.

More importantly, LA is a state where a fricked up future is basically written into the constitution. I know that sounds absurd, but it's true. The slightest deviation in forces outside of our control (oil prices, domestic economic slowdown) throw things into chaos.

Ehh, LA's higher ed is incredibly inefficient, and TOPS is so bloated that it masks all of the inefficiencies in the different university and college systems.

Additionally, IF LA wants to start working towards a solution, perhaps we should focus on producing better high school students rather than funding a scholarship program that rewards mediocrity - a 20 on the ACT and a 2.5 GPA in high school.

Absolutely, there is so much bloat and redundancy among the regional schools. Consolidation is the obvious solution here but ... intractable to say the least.

You do understand that all of those programs you just mentioned are federal programs and have no impact on our state budget, right? Health care and higher education are on the chopping block because our state constitution limits the areas that can be targeted for cuts. Runaway spending by a Republican dominated state legislature and inconsistent sources of revenue (oil and gas) have caused this problem.
