There is no question Rudy Macklin was the rock upon which Dale Brown built a powerhouse program for a 15 year period which was truly an incredible climb to the top. When Dale convinced Rudy to leave his home state and established powers Kentucky and Louisville it signalled to other recruits that LSU was finally committed to being a major national player in college basketball. An incredible level of talent followed and LSU stood toe to toe with Kentucky in the SEC and went to two Final Fours in 6 years.

Javonte Smart can have that same effect as Will Wade establishes his program. By signing Smart Coach Wade can offer other recruits a chance to play with an incredible point guard and to establish themselves as major players in the rebirth of LSU as a national power.

What has been accomplished in a short span has been incredible. The pieces are being set in place. Calipari will not be at Kentucky a lot longer and there is an opportunity for the right coach to establish LSU as the program to go toe to toe with the Big Blue.

That would actually scare me. I want the blue bloods to keep their coaches and not come after Wade

Also...it's hard to compare now to back in the Dale days. The one and dones have completely changed the landscape.

Does this mean he's staying longer than 1 year?

Agree, he has to stay at least two probably three years to make the same difference as Rudy. Remember Rudy came from KY too.

That said, we are finally progressing in the right direction and great to have a five-star player come to LSU because they feel that LSU's COACH has the skills and knowledge to help them get to the next level.

Not come to LSU out of a sense of loyalty to a relative (or close to one).

I'm very optimistic about the future.

I like where you're going with this, but there is one huge difference. It took Dale @7 years to land a player the caliber of Macklin. It took Wade 4 months to land Smart, which is mind blowing. This program is going to be scary good in little to no time at all.

Way to early to start this - although I'm very excited about Wade.

I think Cal sticks around at UK for a while too. He's already failed in the NBA and he won't find a better college job than the one he has.

Much more likely that he will be there several more years than not. Calipari loves the limelight and the money. He's not giving that up Kentucky unless it's a perfect NBA setup.

C'mon MAN he is a one and done. Hard to build a program on a one and done kinda of guy. The question is how does wade build a program on one and done guys. Let's face it we aren't Kentucky UCLA programs.

i doubt we're only going after one and dones. we will have a mix, esp if Wade stays here 3-5 years

but you have to recruit them to get the spotlight to become a program decent/solid recruits want to go to

it is utterly retarded to not recruit top-shelf talent in CBB because you use that to get exposure to make your program seem legit for other talented guys

Can't always assume great players are always one and done. It may depend on where he is projected and if he listens when told to stay in school another year. At any rate this is a signature moment which will draw attention and hopefully some big time recruits this year, not all of whom would leave after one season.

If Wade can set the bar to where every recruit is a top 100, perhaps even top 75 and be consistent this sleeping giant of a program can become elite.

Great pick-up for the Tigers.
But to compare him to Rudy and not understand that Ron Abernathy was the reason Rudy came here is not kowing your LSU Basketball history.
Read below. Without this guy, Dale Brown doesn't make it as a head coach.
Abernathy, Ronald L.
Birth Year : 1950
Abernathy was born in Louisville, KY, to Ben W. and Juanita Abernathy. He is a graduate of Morehead State University (BA) and Louisiana State University (MA). Abernathy was a teacher at Shawnee High School in Louisville when he received the Teacher of the Year Award and was second in the state for Kentucky High School Coach of the Year, both in 1976. From 1972-1976, he was head basketball coach at the school. He left Kentucky to become an assistant basketball coach at LSU, 1976-1989, the first African American basketball coach hired full-time at the school. For more see Dale Brown's Memoirs from LSU Basketball, by D. Brown; and Who's Who Among African Americans, 1980-2006.

I was there. I know it was a package deal. Dale was not the first nor the last to utilize this mechanism. I don't believe it is allowed any longer.

The point is still he got Rudy to LSU and this was the rock upon which the program was built. Who knows if it ever happened if not for Rudy.

Javonte now has the same opportunity to be the focal point another climb to the top. Yes, it is a different environment now , but everyone operates within the system in place.
