Everyone seems so concerned about offering guys this year since we may not have many for next year considering the quality and depth of next year's class.

Correct me if I am wrong. Aren't scholarship really for one year at a time and must be renewed every year by head coach. coach can choose not to renew any one he wants and thus always make the numbers work out each year.

If so, any ideas on who may get schollies not renewed after we take 25 this year and 20-25 next year.

your thoughts.

My thought is that pulling a kid's scholarship is a dick thing to do.

It happens, but that doesn't mean it isn't wrong.

You don't recruit a kid, get him to sign and then pull his scholarship later unless he breaks rules.

I don't disagree with that but college football has become more of a business than academic pursuit. Its operated by some like a NFL training camp. sign them tin hen cut them if they can't contribute (ie. Alabama signed 32 in 08, 28 in 09, and possible 28 in 10; that totals
88 in three years (3 over 85 limit)

its being done elsewhere.

We do it, too.

Andrew Crutchfield
Andrew Hatch

I think they were "encouraged" to move on.

Having a meeting telling someone they probably won't play and it may be better for them to look for somewhere else to play is not the same as just yanking a scholarship.

I agree entirely. So far LSU hasn't had to do it. Next year shouldn't be too hard either since there are 17 (or 18 depending on Foyil) scholarship seniors and you know that some of the 2008 recruits will transfer.

However, if LSU wants to get a full class in 2010, they will probably have to cut 3 or 4 players like Saban has, and that makes me uncomfortable. Of course, Saban is cutting more than 3 or 4 and doing it every year.

It is essentially the same thing. Miles is just a little nicer about it than Saban. Or so it seems, anyway.

Hatch transferred in January so I don't think his decision was numbers related. Maybe he realized he had no shot at playing big time football again, and he should head back to Harvard, where he could get himself a great education and make real connections while being their guaranteed starter for the next 2 years.

I don't know much about the Crutchfield situation, but someone on the Rant said that his parents were very happy about his LSU experience, but he wanted to move closer to home. Does anyone know where he and Clemmons decided to go?

And Ricky Dixon specifically said that Miles asked him to stay on the team when he announced he was leaving.

I think the overall point is lets not worry about
saving schollies for next year. the coaches will "make" the numbers work out and we will not miss out on a top quality player next year because of the number of commits this year.

It never happens that way.

Hatch walked on at LSU. When a walk-on earns a scholarship, it is almost always considered to be a year-to-year basis. This is very different from the promise made to a young man's parents in their living room that you will pay for 4 years which will enable their son to get a degree from your university.

I agree, but when there are 85 scholarship players in 2010 and only 11 seniors, the only way to make the numbers work is to take a page out of Saban or Calipari's book, although it won't be as egregious.

i think miles goes out and finds situations for kids to transfer into so that all parties save face

which is an honorable thing to do

Agreed but I think he does it not just to save face. I think its his responsibility to ensure that the player finishes his college career in a favorable situation (Assuming the player did all that was asked of him at LSU) . I haven't heard one bad word from any former player who "moved on".
