Yes which is what he should have fricking said instead of this BS? I never met Pete Jenkins....come on the frick on.

I didn't even play DL and I met Pete 6 times from 97-2001. I also met Karl at the camps....these guys are famous teachers.

This will hurt LSU D-line recruiting for the foreseeable future.

Nah. I said I understood the melt. People are irrational and emotional.

But this is some bullshite excuse by Mathis to try to justify his choice.

The limits on HC contact restrict him though. I have no idea how much contact Mathis had with anybody, but if they wanted to Karl Dunbar could go in home with him once a week during the appropriate periods. Neither Pete Jenkins nor Ed Orgeron could do the same for different reasons. So in the end, it's entirely plausible that the Bama DL coach was in personal contact with Mathis far more than any DL-focused coach from LSU was.

I think you are just rationalizing a guy who preferred to play at Bama.

If I would point to a single position we've had great success recruiting with Orgeron it's interior DL. People are disappointed and are trying to find something to blame.

It's an excuse, so just let the kid give whatever reason he wants.

You really believe that?

I kind of feel bad for people that is putting 100% into what the kid said.

It may have some truth to it, but there's two sides to that story, if there's another side to it and Mathis is just wanting to take the heat off of himself.

He has to recruit entire classes as HC, not just the DL, or even just being RC. He can't be out recruiting a specific position on top of his duties as HC. Plus, these days it's important for these kids to have a strong relationship with their actual position coach.

If that's the excuse he wants to use, that's cool. It came down to playing time. Y'all realize Mathis is the only high school DT Bama has signed in the last two classes right? He'll he's the only 5 tech they've signed in the last 3 classes because Daron Payne is a nose. It was about playing time. After next year the only guys he'll have in front of him will be OJ Smith and Johnny Dwight.

Correct....Pete is a liability on the trail, that can't be denied. These guys want to have a relationship with their position coach, it may not be the deciding factor but the people writing this off as an excuse are being naive

True, but in this case you can't use the past to predict the future because the rules have changed. When we were chasing Alexander and Lawrence last year, it was O running the roads and relentlessly pursuing these kids. His energy and enthusiasm rubs off on the kids and it's a big reason why he can win some of these battles. He can't do that now, he's not allowed to. So it falls back to the assistants, and the early returns aren't great on them. If Marvin sends in his LOI and somehow Farrell doesn't flip, then that's a huge positive. We'll see

Thomas is doing a fine job but he's still not the guy they need to ultimately have a relationship with
