I absolutely bleed purple and gold so please don't interpret my comments as inflammatory.
I've been to the two Denham Springs games this season and LSU commitment Tevin Lawson has given me very little to get excited about. I expected him to dominate, but I haven't seen that yet. He's played well, but not great. In the Woodlawn game, the only time he actually got aggresive, he broke through for a sack, but grabbed the facemask and was flagged. Obviously, he's made an impression on our coaching staff and I do have faith in them to make good decisions concerning recruiting, but so far, I'm scratching my head over this one. He really must have impressed at the camps.
I really hope to give a much better update after watching the Denham/Catholic game this Friday.

There are certain physical abilities that our defensive coaches look for in a lineman. Lawson had enough of those to earn an early offer, so obviously they think they can work with him enough so that he'll contribute.
I'll be more worried when we start missing on DL guys, which we haven't really done under the current defensive staff.

ProjectP nailed it. It's all about projection with Lawson.
Couple of names to remember that may make this a little easier to understand
Bennie Logan
Quentin Thomas
Same type of prospects as Lawson aside from Lawson's size at the same stage. Those 2 weren't as big as Lawson currently is.

I have learned to never doubt Les and Co. when it comes to recruiting (see T. Mathieu, J. Mills, M. Claiborne, etc.)

Just because I haven't watched him. Is he quick off the ball? Are teams running away from him or doubling him? (I know this is sometimes an issue with good players going into a Sr. season.)

I think Lawson's versatility is also a big plus since he could play both OL or DL down the line.

This.
A lot of times linemen prospects don't necessarily dominate as players in HS. College coaches see certain aspects of their physical nature and determine that, with a D1 strength and conditioning program, as well as D1 coaching, that they will become elite players.

Ive seen him play for two years I was scratching my head as well when he was offered. I'm thinking he would be much more suited as an OL candidate,based on his lack of aggressiveness and subpar speed.

All of you make excellent points and I'm not questioning Coach Miles and company, I'm just trying to see what they see. I hope they make him the next great d-lineman to come out of LSU.
To answer your questions, no, he doesn't seem very quick off the ball and while he has faced some double teams when the play comes his way, they usually elect to match up one-on-one with him. I didn't notice Broadmore or Woodlawn specifically run away from him; however, since he plays the right d-tackle position and most high school offences seem to favor their right, a lot of running plays go to the other side. I would think Nettles would move him around some on that defense to combat that. I guess we'll see as the competition gets tougher this week.
Time will tell. I hope to be impressed this Friday and come back with a different story.

Definitely keep us updated. Always enjoy hearing from people that watch the games in person.
You can get a better feel for their impact on the game, how often they try/take plays off, and overall body language. Stuff you can't really see on highlight videos.

But Bennie Logan was a player that many people on here saw in high school and said, "He hasn't gotten much pub, but that guy's a player." I heard that over and over again. Lots of people saw his talent.

He is being recruited as a DE because (contrary to what one poster in this thread mentioned) he has shown extraordinary speed for a 280 pounder.
He is playing DT for DS because they lack size inside. Down in there his impact plays have been cut down some, but many times he is blowing double teams or single jobs up only to see the play go off tackle or outside.

A few years in a college weightlifting program will completely transform most of these guys. The coaches have to take that into account, as he's never been in a program like what he'll get here. There's a ton of untapped potential under the surface.
I'm not familiar with the guy at all, but I'd imagine there's room for him to bulk up and probably not lose much or any quickness, which is a HUGE deal for a lineman.

Before someone brings up Tyson Jackson or Marcus Spears or Marquise Hill playing DE at that size, that was a different scheme altogether. And none of them weighed 280 going into their senior years of high school, either.

Yea, I saw lavar play a lot in high school and he had to be the laziest LSU DL recruit I'd ever seen

Nevis was a pretty big recruit and I think he was even a Rivals100 guy.
