95% of the time when Todd Foster was the Head Coach in basketball at CLA they didn't play football. Todd told his players they weren't allowed to play and if they did play football they wouldn't be allowed to play basketball or that he would take away their starting position. We had 3 basketball players play on our team last year but they were all reserves. 2 of the 3 that played were our 2 leading WR's last year and one of them Frank Bartley broke a few school records that had been held by Michael Clayton. If we would have had 4-5 basketball players on last year's team on the football team we would have had the most explosive group of skill guys hands down in the state in Class A. The 2 main reasons the basketball kids don't play football at CLA is number one Todd Foster over the years and Warren Capone.

That is BS. As a coach that coached at CLA with Todd and won a state title there, our kids didn't want to play and the ones that did, were younger kids or kids that had very little impact on the court. Capone always begged and pleaded for the kids to joing the football team but they weren't having none of it. Several could have played, started and helped the team be a legit threat for multiple years, but it would have done nothing but hurt their basketball chances. Our staff at CLA never once said a kid couldn't play and when a kid asked if he could play we would say he could but it would hurt his chance at playing time for the basketball team because he would miss several months of practice. So, get your information right.

I think that's BS.. My high school was crap at football.. We didn't make the playoffs my junior or senior year, but our basketball team made the semi finals of the state tournament both years, and each year 4 of 5 starters on the bball team played football.. Also, playing football shouldn't hurt a kids chances in bball, especially since the way y'all talk, CLA didn't seem to have more than a regular season of football to play except for the one year.. These are teenagers were talking about here, for someone to tell them they can't play, or it would hurt their chances is crappy.

This means the same thing in the mind of a teenager. That is very unfortunate. To tell kids that if they go out for football it would hurt their chances in basketball is pure selfishness on the part of the BBall coach. What a horrible situation it must be for a young athlete to go through at 15 or 16 years old. Who's the fricking adult? Where is the school's Principal on the matter?

Thank you.. All the kids have to do is mention something to a parent, who will go to the AD or principal and the situation would be taken care of(hopefully, for the kids sake).. This is a terrible thing to do to high school kids.. The coaches at LSU don't even do this to kids that try and play multiple sports. Just look at the guys we've had play multiple sports over the years.. Most of them have been successful in both

My information is correct. I was told it by multiple parents and former players as well as former coaches that were on Todd's staff. I also had a it happen last summer before Todd left that I talked to a few starters on that team that saw what we were doing on offense and got interested, so I talked to them and they said they would only to find out later that Todd did his magic and then they avoided us. You obviously weren't in the room when Todd said what he said so just because you missed out doesn't mean it didn't happen. Thanks though

I know of the talks, I remember several players come and ask me about them playing, I said I didn't care if they played but it would hinder their chances of playing early in the year. Bottom line is that to play and compete at a high level in any sport, you need to be fully committed to the sport you love. If a kid truly loved both sports, then in a matter of time he would have played for us. My thought is this, if I was the kid being told that playing football would hurt my chances of playing but it didn't mean I would not get a chance, then I would play football. At the end of the day, the kids made the choice to not play. I do know this as well, the basketball kids also would tell Capone and the assistants what they wanted to hear just to get them to leave the room or drop the topic. The basketball players are such nice and humble kids, that they wouldn't tell you no or yes immediately but make you think they were interested and then not bring it up again. Now all this is neither here nor there but it don't effect me in anyway.

Bottom line like you pointed out before, if the basketball kids played football, then yes the football team would have been a powerhouse no doubt or a lot more competitve, but basketball wouldn't have won as many titles. This topic isn't worth a argument to me because I have a college job now and don't have to deal with this.

Well Maggio's case is different. There are a lot of hurdles at CLA. There is almost no support for athletics from the administration and higher up's and never any money to help make the facilities respectable. It will always be an uphill climb there. Basketball is the only sport that can be a big time sport there because you don't need much to field a solid basketball team.

Yea I heardthe news of Maggio early in the week as a possibility of him leaving. He is definitely leaving on top with a title for sure. I have heard it was due to health issues but who knows. Could be some other things but I do know that financially it would not be a stretch to think that was the case also. CLA will officially go downhill now and it sucks because it is a great campus with a good academic setting and good teachers. The basketball team is always elite but maybe Mahan can now get the basketball kids to play football too now since they have no coach.

I always knew you had no business acting as some authority on offensive playcalling, especially criticizing successful D-1 offensive coordinators.
