I have never seen anything out of Courtney that would suggest he could be an SEC starter.

He's really only played one season, that being last yr. And he played well when JOB had his injury. I think JJones' offense will fit him well. He can get up and down the court fairly well and also has a nice outside touch that has been improving. He'll see plenty of time at the 4.

I've heard good things about Courtney this offseason. I think he will have a good season.

That's good to hear...Can Tuba even play? I think I recall a poster saying last year that he's got zero b-ball skills.

After watching Tuba play in a couple contests last year I'm going with a big hell no. He would have had to improve a lot to even get the ball in his hands IMO outside of catching a rebound. Him putting the ball on the ground = instant turnover basically.

Fill space, change/block a few shots, grab a couple rebounds. No offense. If we get 5 minutes a game from him of non-disastrous play, it will be beautiful.

Honestly if the kid is going to redshirt in football....

Just saying

I hope you are joking (which you seem to be) because there is no way that Les is going to let any football players join the basketball team until football season is over and probably not even then. Extremely hard for a player to transition from one sport to the other without any practice or preparation. Hell, hard enough for a freshman basketball player to make the transition from high school when they are at practice from day one.

He let Ronald Martin play. He was on the team by early SEC play.

Hypothetically speaking, because I doubt he's interested, but Dillon Gordon could help this team. He outplayed Gathers in the one matchup I saw. He's just as big and better on the boards and defense. Gathers is a much better offensive player.

Gordon could play college basketball on the Southland level.

I could see that. After all, he's 7-2. He doesn't have to be polished. Johnny said in the interview that he's ramped up his focus, I assume because he's realizing he'll be more than a novelty out there. If he can get some basic footwork down, learn how to box out and improve his ball skills enough to catch rebounds and catch passes by the rim and put them in, he can help.

I mean, did I mention that he's 7-foot-2?

Yes, I agree. Don't need a lot from him. Lots of unskilled big men make contributions. A few minutes per half is all we need.

Against lesser competition, I would let him play a lot. He needs to get a little confidence.

Late to the thread, but I think Courtney is a guy who will benefit greatly from the coaching change. He is a 6'8" athletic power forward who was forced to the wing because of JOB/Hamilton/Warren/White got the C/pf minutes on a team that played in the half court. If as we expect Jones will play full court BB then Courtney can run and jump with anybody. Get his points in transition and off offensive rebounds while knocking down an occasional 3 (37% on 27 tries). The opportunity is there for him to play a big role.

There would be 3 unused scholarships this year. May as well let him use it. I'm sure he's a good kid that is valuable in practice, simulating bigger opponents.

I know it was talked about that he was going to play and he was listed on the roster for awhile but I know he never got in a game. Did he even ever make a practice? Someone, Les?, must have told him that he had a chance to play a lot of football this year and he better not miss spring practice if he wanted to do that.

That's not at all how it happened. Martin realized quickly that he was not good enough to get playing time and quit. It was the right decision. It's not worth it to play an additional sport, if you aren't good enough to get in the game.

Okay, thanks for clarifying. My imagination is sometimes too active.

Has this been posted yet? Figured it didn't need it's own thread:

quote:

*Jarrell Martin is an especially popular name on the recruiting trail this fall because of his outbreak and terrific play in the summer. While he has plenty of interest, don’t expect a college choice from Martin any time soon, as his high school coach has told multiple outlets that he plans to sign during the last period. He recently cut his list of schools to seven -- St. John’s, Oklahoma State, UCLA, Alabama, Louisville, LSU and Texas A&M. At this stage, Martin doesn’t have any visits set up. Although it’s pure speculation, LSU has received a lot of buzz in this recruitment and could be the team to beat here.

From Evan Daniels of Scout. Going to be a long recruitment but good to hear.
