From Scout.com
quote:

"Cameron is an outstanding kicker. He has a big leg and hits a great ball off the ground. Kickoffs are also near the top of his class. He has outstanding potential and continues to improve each time we see him. He has become a top national college prospect. Look for Cameron to have a huge summer and pick up D1 offers. A fine young man with a great attitude and work ethic. Excellent prospect." -Chris Sailer

He has a cannon leg, but I don't know how the staff can project that he's a solid bet from 45 yards under pressure. Kicker is probably the position that relies most on mental makeup than any other position besides quarterback.

The talent disparity from scholarship player to walk-on is probably lowest for kickers and fullbacks. That's why I believe if you use a scholarship on one of those positions, he must be the elite of the elite to justify it. Right now this just seems like a gamble by the staff, no pun intended. I truly hope he is an All-American at LSU though.

We need him this season. Get him on the correspondence courses. He can knock his senior year out by the time fall camp starts.

from a kickoff perspective, looks like he is already there vs. his class.

Les loves settling for the FG. LSU could justify a scholarship kicker every year until they get it right.

Like any position, there's potential seen. Some live up to and reach their potential, while others struggle with it.

Hairston has struggled up to this point to match his accuracy to his leg power. So has Cade Foster another highly touted scholarship guy at Bama.

Works out sometimes, other times it does not. Josh Jasper for instance was a scholarship well worth giving out. He certainly lived up to his billing.

Yes, the Tigers' place kicking prospects for 2013 do not appear to be very impressive at all.

One other question about him: Does he have a soccer background? I am sure he probably does--it seems like most great kickers since about 1980 (or whenever) have that!

And as noted on another post, hope Gamble is as successful as another LSU place kicker from the Dallas area, David Browndyke, was.

Not sure he "loves settling" but practically speaking, the result is the same. Thus, a FG kicker at LSU is much more important than say Oregon, etc.

BTW, a funny quote from LoBo at 24/7 a reader:

"I will get to watch him kick up close and personal. I work for the Flower Mound Police department and work "security" for the football games so I will keep an eye on him for u guys."

Perhaps, this should be employed for ALL prospects at ALL schools!!!

yeah, but the scholarship for Andrew C. from North Carolina wasn't, but then again, I think the guy only stayed at LSU 1 year when Jaspar won the job...so it was only a 1 year scholarship essentially.

Yeah the coaches kind of freaked and gave out 2 schollies that class, but it worked out just fine with Jasper being one of if not our best ever kicker while Crutchfield transferred out very quickly.

That's cool. But when someone mentioned that it would be sweet for LSU to have a white WR, we ended up with a TD race war. I'm not complaining about anyone's comments here. I merely point out the double standard.

Actually I was happy that we were going after a white WR and I knew he had to be good for us to even offer. The bonus was that his is 6'1 200lbs runs a 4.39 and is polished at his position already.

I think it is funny and ironic that my high school alma mater would have a black kid as their kicker.

Awesome pickup and I hope it pans out. You never know how bad you need a kicker/punter/long snapper until you don't have a good one. Might be the three less recognized positions on the field, but those three can make or break games

Huge leg and if he's accurate on kicks inside the 40 or outside 49 I don't have to hold my breath like with Alleman. Dude was hit or miss inside the 40 and 100% miss outside of 49

Alleman was a disappointment to me. Not only was his accuracy not as good as say a Jaspar for example but he was supposed to have a "big leg". Yet his kickoffs were among the worst for any team, and I don't think LSU was telling him to just kick it to the 10. That is why they started using Hairston who CAN make it unreturnable. Miles then made IMO the correct judgment... If the KR can hurt us, we will give them the 25 yard yard via the rule change. If he can't we will kick it down near the goal line and intend on saving at least that 5 yards in field position. Hairston is a fine KO guy...what has not been proven yet is his quality as a FG kicker obviously.
