I know we wont get Pint, but what's the story on him potentially dropping due to a not as good senior season?

Read reports where he was hitting as high as 98 as a junior but topped out at 94 as a senior and has scouts worried.

Link?

News article from May 26th that states he was hitting triple digits!

quote:

“It registered three digits up there,” Bushnell said of the 100 mph heat Pint posted three times. “I didn’t want to look up there; I was scared to look. But I looked up the first time and I saw the century (mark) up there.”

Pint improved his command and pitching accuracy this season. His velocity decreased in 2016 which is why his fastball has maxed out at 94 miles per hour in 2016 after posting a 98 mile per hour fastball in 2015. That's why Pint's draft stock is taking a slight hit. Pint should still be a top 10 or possibly a top 5 pick. He won't go in the top 2. Atlanta and Colorado are the earliest possible landing spots for Riley Pint.

Riley Pint is a special high school pitcher. The 6-4 195 lb Pint went 3-2 with a 3.19 ERA as a freshman in 2013. A year later he went 8-0 with a 2.58 ERA as a sophomore in 2014. In 2015, he went 5-2 with a 2.20 ERA before winning the Gatorade High School Player of the year in baseball. Pint was the first player to win Gatorade High School Player of the year before his senior season which speaks volumes about him. Pint pitched his season opener yesterday and pitched 7 innings in a 12-0 victory over Blue Valley North on the road by pitching a complete game only allowing 1 hit. St. Thomas Aquinas hosts Blue Valley North in their home opener in 6 days, and it would not surprise me if Pint started again with 6 days to rest before the teams second game of the season. St. Thomas Aquinas is 16-1 this season with Pint going 10-1 in those starts with some scouts saying that Pint could surpass Groome to be the top pick now with all the momentum he's maintained. St. Thomas Aquinas is now 18-4 after starting the year 16-1. Pint is now 10-4 rather than being 10-1. His 2.01 ERA which was a career best has now skyrocketed up to 3.40 after 3 consecutive losses. Pint has a 98 mile per hour 4-seam and 2-seam fast ball that is just as effective as Alec Hansen's fastballs. Pint also displays an 82 mile per hour knuckle curveball and an 85 mile per hour changeup that is 30 miles faster than the 55 mile per hour fastball by Alec Hansen. Unlike Hansen, Pint can get on base as a batter. Pint has a .325 batting average when stepping up to the plate which is phenomenal for a pitcher. Pint's knuckle curveball could develop into a slider. He lacks the upper body strength to be an effective starting pitcher at this point, but that will change as he develops over the next few years. His velocity and pitching accuracy needs to improve. He's inconsistent with his delivery and doesn't always throw the ball in the right locations. Still, despite this, Pint is the second best prospect in the 2016 MLB Draft. That guy contradicts himself multiple time in one article. Not sure you can trust that source at all.

Keelyn Johnson flips to La Tech

Not sure if discussed yet, but pineville catcher looks to be heading to Ruston.

Good for him if he's getting more scholarship money there, but it would have been nice to get him here. I think he's going to be a good one.

ETA: It's good to see La Tech making an effort in baseball under Greg Goff. The better the in-state schools are, the better our RPI will be each year.

So do we not have a catcher in the 2016 class now? Or is Nick Coomes that guy?

This puts us at 48 people on my eligibility chart for next year. The chart includes every player with eligibility remaining, so the draft will do the heavy lifting on getting it down to 35.

From what I've read, Rankin Woley is a catcher as well. He's listed as a 2B in a lot of places though.

ETA: Mason Templet and Nick Coomes also apparently have experience behind the plate.

Woley concerns me a bit as a draft risk simply because he has a teammate that's going to go in the first round, so he's been seen a ton by scouts throughout his HS season.

This is the move I talked about on pg 6. It is finally official. From my understanding he was never offered ANY money at LSU. He was going to be a preferred walk-on. Tech offered him 50%.

As for his on the field play. He is a strong defensive guy with a cannon for an arm. At the plate he can swing it well, but misses too many mistake fastballs. He will make people pay on mistake offspeed stuff though. Good line drive type pop.

I don't see 13 people getting drafted if you combine the current players and recruits so it's going to have to come down to transfers as well

Baseball America has made their top 200 into a top 300. I think I've already listed the ones from the top 200. The players I've noticed at first glance between 201 and 300 are:

224 - Kyle Weatherly RHP Grayson CC
242 - Jared Poche
288 - Nolan Williams SS Home School
290 - Josh Smith SS Catholic High
299 - Zach Watson OF West Ouchita High

I think he was touted as potential 1st round guy for the 2017 draft, but he reclassified to 2016. Maybe that combined with no HS season to scout him has made him drop. Honestly those are both guesses.

Curious to see if he makes it to campus. He and Watson have elite speed.

MLB.com on Hess
quote:

After a solid summer on the showcase circuit, Hess matched up against top Draft prospect Braxton Garrett at the National High School Invitational and held his own. While his stuff hasn't been as sharp all spring, he's impressed with arm strength. Whether he can be signed away from LSU remains to be seen. Hess was up to 97 mph in the early stages of the spring season in Virginia after his NHSI performance. His velocity backed up a little, but he should have at least an above-average fastball in the future. He combines it with a good hard slider. He hasn't shown much of a changeup, but he also hasn't needed it in high school. He has a bulldog mentality and goes right after hitters, getting plus marks for his makeup. The biggest concern with Hess is about his delivery, which features a serious head-whack. If you like him, you might compare him to Max Scherzer and think it will work. If not, you think he's a future reliever. More than likely, it's something teams will consider after three years in Baton Rouge.

Definantly sounds like teams expect him to go to college. They gave him a 40 grade on his change up and 45 on control. Something he can work for the next 3 years

That's awesome. I think it helps us that he would be a draft eligible sophomore. At least I think he would be.

ETA: Based on his birthday, Hess would be a draft eligible sophomore.

Here is the report on Kyle Weatherly from MLB.com:

quote:

As a 150-pounder with a low-80s fastball and a straight-overhand delivery when he arrived at Grayson (Texas) CC in the fall of 2013, Weatherly was so raw that he redshirted in his first year of junior college. He has put on 45 pounds and developed better mechanics since, blossoming into one of the top juco pitching prospects in the 2016 Draft.

Moving from the bullpen in 2015 to the rotation this spring, Weatherly ranged from 88-95 mph with his fastball. He relies more heavily on a four-seamer with running life because he has trouble commanding a two-seamer with sink. His best secondary pitch is a slider that flashes plus but flattens out into a slurve too often, and he's making progress with a changeup now that he's using it more as a starter.

Weatherly's 6-foot-4 frame should create angle and plane on his pitches, but he mitigates his height with a drop-and-drive delivery. He'll get the opportunity to start in pro ball but some scouts believe he'll be better off as a reliever concentrating on his four-seamer and slider. He'll attend Louisiana State next year if he doesn't sign this summer.
