Looking to install a large shade sail in my backyard but would rather use metal posts rather than wood.

Any ideas where to find 12ft metal posts in the baton rouge area?

Amko fence in Gonzales, but prepare to be floored with pricing

A few months ago I got a 4” x8’ galvanized post, $115. Hopefully prices have come down

I assume you’re referring to square tubing and not round? If so, any of the steel supply houses in your area can help…

I recently paid $68/pop for 2-3/8 (OD) 10.5’ sch40.

If I’m envisioning what you want to do correctly, I’d go with square tubing, which I think would look better.

Why 4”?

2” would be more than enough wouldn’t it?

Was about to come recommend the Pipe Shop. Bought some pipe from them today.

To pull those shades taught requires a good deal of tension. A 2" pipe 8' in the air will likely flex a great deal.

Its a pretty big shade sail I'm doing. 2in would have way too much flex. Same reason I don't want to use wood.

Not aware of any, but they aren't hard to do. Plenty of videos on youtube.

I had one a few years ago but I used 4x4 wood posts and after about 8 months the posts looked like bananas.

I went down the sail shade rabbit hole last summer. Sounds like you got your plan straight, going with the 4” steel posts which will hold up really well. Just to throw it out there, doing 6” posts will hold up well with the tension and I liked the aesthetics a bit better. With my project I ended up anchoring the posts using some moment resistant Simpson post bases cast into 42” concrete piers. The post bases are expensive but with the price of the steel piping it might end up being a similar cost in the end.

I’ve stained them, strung up some lights, added caps and other crap at this point but gets the point across. End of the day if the posts rot out, I can just pull them out of the bases and replace them.

How big a sail are you going with? I just got in a Triangle 28’x28’x28’. I found a website that has a lot of detail about Installing these things but their chart stops at 388 square ft. I am wondering if I should go up to 6” square pipe to cover the extra load.

My plan is to put 1 anchor point in the fascia (making sure to alight it with a rafter) and 2 poles in my yard.

You're not concerned with those wood 6x6s warping over time with the constant tension?

Piggybacking on this thread - where are y'all getting shade sails? Any recommendations for a manufacturer?

I bought mine from Costco, think I paid around $50 for a large rectangle. However, Ive also previously bought them from random places like Amazon. I wouldn't spend a ton on the sail because eventually the sun will do its thing to damage it.

Spend the money and effort on the post/anchor system and just buy a new sail every couple years. Unless you want to blow money on a fancy sail for up to $2000.

eta: First, determine the size of sail you want and build your post/anchor system for that size. Then, get replacement sails as needed. There are plenty of options in standard sizes.

Im having a hard time wrapping my head around how those simpson bases are able to secure those 6x6 with no movement. You are far more brave than I attempting that.
