Building a new house and I’m looking into flooring for most of the house. Bathrooms will be tile but bedroom, laundry room, closets and common areas will be hardwood, tile that looks like wood or luxury vinyl.

I would just go with a wood but I have two Great Danes and they will destroy a would floor with scratches so I’m looking for something that will be nice and durable. I also don’t want anything that will be dated in 5 years if I can help it.

The new luxury vinyl plank is amazing flooring. Especially if you have small children or dogs

Things get popular and then they go away, for a reason

Laminate, vinyl, peel and stick

the classics never go away though

I'd just be careful about scratches.

Several years back it scratched very easy.

Not sure about the new products.

It’s vinyl floor, doesn’t matter what adjective they use to describe it.

You don’t want that in a brand new house. With dogs, put down tile.

It’s shite waste of money if you planning on moving and selling your home you will not recoup any money spent on it. If you stay and like it then bobs your uncle

+1. It’s the only way to go with dogs. The only risk is cracking if you drop something very heavy on it. Even then, worst case is you replace the broken tile.

It looks terrible. It cracks. It is cold and uncomfortable. It requires regular maintenance to keep grout sealed, etc.

If water is a concern, I am only interested in vinyl plank. Looks good. Easy to replace. Soft on the feet. No maintenance. Not frigid cold in winter. Overall it just looks better too.

I’ve heard from a few folks that vinyl flooring brings down the value of your house.

A higher quality LVP is really nice stuff and is extremely durable. Should a section get damaged it’s easy to replace. It’s about the same cost as S&F floors for the quality of LVP you would want.

Completely agree with everyone on tile being hard and cold and not a good choice other than bath/mud/laundry rooms.

We have installed it many times. (client's choice) Product has seemed to be fine over the last 4 years. I would go with ceramic tile before luxury vinyl considering the dogs.

We have it in our basement, the home Depot life proof brand. It's holding up just fine with dogs and kids. Love that it's waterproof.

Luxury vinyl just seems like an oxymoron

Anyone who thinks vinyl planks are aesthetically superior to tile hasn’t looked at very many tile options. Tile can be amazingly beautiful; many incredible options out there beyond the ugly cheap beige oversized squares sold at big box stores. From mosaics to Italian traditional patterns to waxed terra-cotta to the arts and crafts stule hex and octagons....

Hard and cold is why I love it. I live in a swamp: ten months out of the year, I want cool tiles underfoot. I never have to spend a minute of concern on water damage or wear. I’ve got a classic look easily softened by rugs if I get tired of it.

Seriously, a tile floor can be a work of art. Just consider Roman mosaic floors, still spectacular after 2,000 years or more. (Edited for spelling.)
