Ever since I went fully remote about 2 years ago, I work on the table in our formal dining room. We rarely use our formal dining room, and when we have extra people over for holidays, etc, I just disassemble my stuff and stick it in the corner of my bedroom, and reassemble later (I have two monitors and a docking station).

My wife wants to re-do the formal dining room this year, with getting a new table, china cabinet / hutch (which we don't currently have), and replace the buffet. We are also looking at the posibility of adding a small dry bar or possibly even a wet bar (the formal dining room is next to the kitchen, there is an outside hose bib on the same wall as the kitchen sink... so if there is any way we could run plumbing tied off of that about 5-10 feet to create new plumbing in the formal dining room, for a reasonable cost, we might look at that).

If we do this, the wife doesn't want to have my setup liek I currently have it. We don't have any extra bedrooms, and she doesn't really want me to use part of our bedroom space for my office since I often work late.

Anyone out there that has come up with a layout/furniture that can make all this work and have it look nicer / more effective?

I did what you are doing for 12 months, then I got a rolling sit/stand desk. We have an additional front room that I use now, and I just roll it in a corner when not in use.

I've been remote since 2017 and previously used spare bedrooms. As we had more kids, I was forced into the formal dining like you. We decided to "get rid of" the formal dining and fully make it my office since that's more important than a dining room that gets used at most 5x a year. We closed in the open walls and added french doors, making it a fully closed off room. Now we just don't host anything, which is fine by me. My house stays clean, I don't have to entertain, my wife doesn't have to stress as host, and I get my own space when I need to really focus.

If you're out of extra room to work, then you have to decide if you're income is more important than hosting a dinner a couple times a year. There is no functional "nice" way to set up a dual monitor and docking station in dining room. Maybe use a rolling cart as a desk to make it easier to take away? Even then, you will cramped with all that extra stuff after the remodel.

Well it sounds like your wife is being illogical (surprise!). You already don’t have room for stuff so let’s add more stuff to make for less available room, brilliant!

Could you possibly build out an office closet that you can keep open for the other 364 days out of the year then close and keep all your stuff connected when you formally dine?

I have an extra bedroom for my office but have often thought about a Murphy bed like option for a desk.

Similar to something like this but more functional. I’d try to make it larger and look more like a built in cabinet when it is closed not just hanging on the wall.

Not to sound sarcastic but does your wife enjoy hosting a few times a year more than your income from work? FWIW we built a year ago and omitted a formal dining. We get much more use out of an office which has a small desk, peloton, and a cut out in wall for my gunsafe. We do host a few times a year but we can seat 10 at the round Bfast area table and island. If we have more than that I bust out the folding tables and table cloths lol.

Well, Hell. Sounds like she’s trying to burn it down.

Take over the living room. If she wants to live somewhere, she can live in the kitchen, the laundry room, the bedroom, the bathroom, the yard, or her parent’s, etc. etc.

I had a similar issue figuring out where to set up shop. I turned the fireplace room/study into my home office. It had four access points which was great for the floor plan. Not so much for a quiet place to be productive. I closed off one entry that led to the foyer. The others were the kitchen, laundry which leads to the garage, and a set of French doors that open up to an outdoor kitchen. Basically, the only direction I expect to be disturbed from is the kitchen.

The idea that something as important as your livelihood should be relegated to a custom designed desk or work surface that fits, or doesn’t stand out, in a room that you’ll seldom use with a wet bar you don’t technically need (which is a frickin awesome idea btw) for the sake of having guests sit down to eat in a formal dining area for Thanksgiving, Christmas, and Easter is unequivocally ridiculous and unreasonable.

I’m sorry. I’m getting unreasonably mad at your wife now. I apologize.

Moral of the story:

adding a small dry bar

If you have room for a dry bar, this is where your desk/office should go. There are plenty of images and setups online that you can view that have convertible desk units that don't look like a desk when you are not working. Think Murphy Bed type units for the desktop.

I built a Murphy desk at the beginning of Covid when we were fully remote. I painted it and it sat about 7 inches off the wall when closed. Some good tutorials on YouTube. I’m back in the office full time now though.

Kinda sounds like a dinning room overhaul insures that you will be out "your" home office space.

Is working from home permanent? If so, then have you thought about a small stand alone office outside?
