New to pool ownership. I'm having to add some water about once a week when the level drops an inch or 2. Is this normal evaporation, or do I have a leak?

That’s normal. Some pools have auto leveling systems that connect to your water line and add the water automatically when it drops below a set level.

I lose between 1/8” and 1/4” per day in summer when there is no rain. That’s normal evaporation. I lose even more than that at other times of the year on windy days when the humidity is low.

I have a gunite pool and find when the calcium gets low, that the water level drops quicker. I assume late to be leeching through the unite, but could be totally off base with this reasoning.

We do have to fill it more during the summer months if there is a lack of rain.

My buddy shut his off. He had a leak and took him a year to realize it. When I was building mine, the contactor said he quit putting them in for this very reason.

1/4" is pretty normal for me but I feel like it's been closer to 3/8" for the past few weeks.

Well, I dont fricking know. You know why I dont know? Cause no one can fix a leak in pools in Northeast La. My pool has been out all year and will probably not be repaired till the season is over. Because of the delay I now have to buy a new liner and start the search over for a pool guy to put it in.

Preach. When I first moved in, I had absolutely no clue how to operate my equipment (the equipment pad and piping is a giant unlabeled clusterfrick). I called 3 different pool guys to come give me a class, clean the pool, and look into installing a propane heater. They all promised to get back with me with prices and such, and never heard from them again. Luckily the old owner came over and explained the system, so I atleast know how to use it.

You can do the bucket test to see if your pool leaks or if water loss is due to evaporation. https://www.americanleakdetection.com/diy-leak-tests/bucket-test/

I do

It can evaporate and then you get air in your lines which cause improper pump action

Check the seam where the skimmer connects to the pool. Very common spot for a leak to occur and pretty hard to find because its in the throat of the skimmer channel.

Yes. Our water drops about 1 inch per week as long as it's humid.

If it's hot and dry out, it drops faster than that.

This is the answer.

Put water in a plastic bucket and set it on the top step in the pool. Make sure the water level in bucket is even with level outside the bucket.

Watch it for a few days. If pool is dropping quicker than bucket water then you likely have a leak.

You can get an aftermarket autofiller / connects to hose on Amazon for like $50. That will keep you at the level you set it to
