The grass around my garden beds and house is dying in this strange line. It seems to be dying the exact same distance from the house in a few different areas. Grass is centipede.

I thought maybe it was chinch bug so I put down some granules but it has continued to slowly advance.

Any ideas?

No traffic in the areas where it’s dying

It kind of looks like someone sprayed Round Up.

Possibly sandy backfill for that sprinkler system?

My backyard where I put in French drain looks just like that beginning of winter and early spring. It fills in nicely late spring and summer but does tend to die back a little and dormant earlier/longer than the rest of the yard.

Had a similar area develop between the fence and bird feeders. Turns out it was raccoons.

It’s not the dog.

Raccoons are an interesting thought. I might have to set up a trail cam and see if anything happens

I did find what I thought was nice in my attic recently. Wonder if it could be voles.

How would I figure that out? I’m guessing set some sort of trap

Can’t see gutters but doubt it’s that unless you have rounded gutters. But mine looks like that when my gutters clog and overflow.

Do you fertilize with a rotary spreader? If so, could be excessive fertilizer pile up on the inside of the wheel. Some rotaries have that problem when the fertilizer hits the inside of the wheel and drops straight down, hence a greater concentration that can kill the turf.

Did you use the "edge" feature on a spreader? The crappy ones like scotts can drop too much in a line like that.

Centipede is not a hearty grass so it doesn't take much to trample it down. It's either foot traffic or dog traffic. Chinch bugs are active during the summer.

I agree with others that it looks like a wheel/tire track... Did you happen to spray a herbicide or other chemical and accidently ride through it on your mower or spreader wheel? I had a leaking jug of round up and dripped onto my ZTR and I didn't realize it for a week when I had streaks like this all around the barn until it wore off.

You ain’t lyin. I’ve had st augustine forever and moved into a house with centipede a few years back. I was bound and determined to figure it out. To put some respect on its name even. Turns out It’s just a bitch made grass.

Mine does the same thing above the culvert near the road when it's dry. I just assumed it's because the soil dries out when we haven't had rain for a while due to the shallowness.

Something must be buried there.

I would almost guarantee you that's an animal.

Coons, armadillo or something.
