Going rate for roofing per square?

1. To me shingle brand is the least important. Somewhere like consumer reports will give you pros and cons, but most that are similar weight will perform similarly. Once the shingles get heavier they are better. They go by packs to the square, so a 4 pack per square shingle is better than a 3 pack per square shingle. 95% of roofs are 3 packs per square and those are all comparable. That said, I prefer atlas or certainteed.

2. Price should fall between 300 and 400 per square material and labor. Right now there is not a big demand like there was 6-12 mo ago. The supply yards went from attlotments to not ordering every week.

3. It is hard to really judge an install for a homeowner. I would have an expectation sheet (nails per shingle, roof jack styles, Ridge vent style etc etc) and pay a home inspector $400 to come inspect work in place. They will check things like caulking also.

I second that the Atlas rep is a clown. I like the shingle, but the south Louisiana sales rep is a CLOWN.

300 in Nola for a smaller company.

There’s no possible way you are charging $300 a square unless you are grabbing the lowest of the line shingle. I ran some quick math and you would make around $300 off the job.

To the guy saying he would install OC, you’d charge 300-350 to install that?

What about pitch? Cuts? Crap felt or synthetic felt? Valley metal I’m sure. Blending accessories? Cementing the valleys?

All I’m trying to say is that there are so many variations to a roof and to the products and craftsmanship of each company.

I know for fact that there is a large company in Southern Louisiana that has large pockets. Commercials all day. Ads everywhere. They grab their roofers in the morning at HD.

Consider all shingle ratings with an asterisk. It’s numbers with perfect installation in a vacuum. The only fact is that architectural can handle more mph than 3tab

Depends on the installer. Depends on small things 90% of installers don’t do that others do.

I paid $400/square all told for an Atlas Class IV architectural shingle right around 24m ago.


I got a quote on a metal shingle that gets screwed into place (EDCO Arrowline slate). That was about $1250/sq. According to the salesman, right in line with actual slate or standing seam metal. I quickly learned that there are classes of products far above what I can justify paying for.

Any reputable company with insurance etc is going to start at $425 and go up from there. That is for synthetic underlayment, architectural ( GAF, OC, Atlas) with ice/ water in valleys etc. There are advantages to using a reputable company for warranty etc. The guy that said $300-$350is way off, we don’t even see Jose in his pick up charging that.
