Lost power last night for about 10 hours. This morning hooked up generator to transfer switch outside. A short bit later it poured on the generator.
This can't be safe??? I hear you don't want it covered??? I hear you can't put under carport???
This is interesting LINK
Comments suggestions?
Thanks, in advance.

You can "google" and confirm but code for a fixed unit is 5 feet away from doors, windows, and any fresh air intakes. When I had a portable unit, I always kept it in my open air carport (not garage)....it was probably at least 10-15 feet away from doors/windows.

Fixed units all have enclosures but many have suggested taking the sides off and/or opening the top if it is not raining and hot outside.

That's a cover for storage...
Piece of plywood works to keep water off it without stopping airflow

Carbon monoxide will kill you. It'll get up in the attic or go through the soffit and into your house.

If you are talking about a portable generator on wheels, than it's basically just an air cooled gas engine. It needs airflow. You can put a tarp over it, but I'd keep it off the generator itself.

I've just left mine in the rain. The gas tank covers the intake and exhaust and the air-cooled motor generally burns off any rain. If it was pouring I'd probably just put a tarp over it though.

I've explored the GenTent before. Does it withstand storm winds?

couldn't you just use a 10'x10' canopy tent like those for tailgating or something? That way the generator gets enough air around it for cooling. I have a portable diesel generac that the gentent won't work with because of the exhaust location.

This is my plan if it rains while I’m on generator power. Haven’t had to try it yet.

Thatd work fine and everyone probably has one already.

Just remember to anchor that thing so it doesnt fly away.

One of those cheap pop up deer hunting blinds could probably work with the exhaust pointed towards the open door or window of the blind. They also fold flat for storage

I'm not so sure you could secure a parachute like that

Someone mentioned before get two sawhorses and put a piece of plywood over it. Put a cinder block on top.

That or simply put a large golf type umbrella over it. Rig up a way to stake it in the ground.

At the old hunt camp we used a generator. We kept rain off it with 4 T posts and a piece of 4x4' plywood U-bolted to the posts.

Plywood was probably 2-3 feet above the top of the generator. Worked well for us.
