Building a bed out of reclaimed cypress from my grandmothers house and nearing completion. I’ve built a lot of stuff but never been able to get a good clean poly finish always left with bubbles or Buildup. Wondering if anyone knows of someone around BR that paints/ finishes furniture?

Try General Finishes Arm-R-Seal (oil-based) or High Performance Water-based Topcoat.

Brush or spray on. Fool-proof and look amazing.

Wipe on the Arm-R-Seal recommended by the other poster. Buff between coats with 0000 steel wool or scotch Brite pads. Not difficult to get a nice finish. You can thin with mineral spirits if desired to make it wipe on better. Just practice on scraps to see what you like.

Don't brush. That takes expertise.

Two things bring a lot of bubbles to the surface of a finish like poly or varnish. One is shaking the product. Do not shake the can of poly but use a stir stick and gently stir it without making bubbles.

Next, use a good natural hair brush like a Wooster for putting on finish coats and don't over-brush it as that also makes bubbles in the end product. Use light strokes to not press the bristles hard into the wood surface as that also can cause bubbles.

Like mentioned, steel wool is your friend, just make sure the finish is totally dry before scuffing the finish or it could gum up, especially in cool, damp weather where drying is much slower.

invest in an HVLP sprayer, even the $10 at harbor freight can get you a good finish with water based poly, just gotta make sure not to let it run.

Minwax wipe on poly is fool proof. Also arm r seal as mentioned above but minwax is available in stores. Just make sure it the wipe on version and do some test pieces. And as far as water based poly, I only recommend that on stained or painted pieces because on natural wood it doesn’t bring out the color like an oil based does.

Stir it then cut oil based poly 1/3 with mineral spirits use a cotton T-shirt rub the finish on it will dry reasonably quick build coats then when you have some thickness built up wet sand it with 800 apply more coats go to 1000 1500 it will be slick as glass
