Fireplace soot blowing into the room...and flue was open

So a friend has a wood burning fireplace and went to bed before the fire was completely out...when he woke up, there was soot all over floor and chairs near the firepace. The flue was open. Two story house so long chimney...
Wind? or does he have a blockage somewhere?

Could be a dirty chimney - needs chimney sweep.
Wet logs - use dry logs in the future.
Improperly positioned logs - probably had logs too close to the exterior of the fireplace.

Fire got too low and the cold air stacked up in the chimney won out. HVAC intake may have created a negative pressure on the house too when the fire died down.

had a cousin that had this happen. chimney cap was facing the wrong direction allowing the north wind into the chimney.

I loved the wood stove at my old house. You have to commit to starting it though. If you don't put enough kindling and fast burning wood to get the heat up and the smoke starts backing up into the house you're in a death spiral because opening windows to get the smoke out then pulls even more smoke down the chimney into the room along with artic air and within minutes your wife is on the phone with a divorce attorney.
But once you get that bitch HOT it will keep a huge space toasty on just a couple logs. Ours had that combuster that allowed you to close the flue completely and it would recycle the smoke and heat inside the stove and a log would last for hours.
Loved that thing.... When it worked.

Hot stack fire burning middle of the night fire went out. Colder air out side rush in a cooled the stack to rapidly cooler air is heavier. Alway leave window crack open closet to the fire place.

could wind have also been a factor?

Close the flue before going to bed or have a bigger fire that lasts longer.
Cold air drops, once the fire was out the cold air outside went down the chimney.
It was human error, that’s all. Easy fix
