A couple weeks back I receieved a call about the dryer at our rental property where the tenants are complaining that it is taking 3 cycles to dry clothes. The tenants have been in for about a month. I went and checked the dryer vent and it was clogged up with lint, I'm assuming it was left that way by the previous tenants.

Unclogged the line and after a couple more weeks go by we just got a call that they are still having the same issue. I'm assuming the vent being clogged up over time did damage to the dryer. Anyone have experience dealing with this before? I called a local appliance repair place and they are going to come look at it tomorrow, but I dont want to get taken for a ride.

TIA

I just took apart our dryer to replace rollers & belts. The amount of lint/dust inside the dryer cabinet and blower duct was amazing. It might pay to pop the lid and clean out the interior air path as well.

I'm a landlord and will replace appliances if the cost to repair is over half the cost of new.

I don't do refrigerators, washers and dryers. I make the tenants supply. But many landlords do provide.

Clogged up vent can cause heating coil to overheat and fail. Unplug the coil, and check for continuity. I bought a new coil 8-9 months ago…..about $60.

do they not understand the filter must be cleaned after every use or it wont work?

if the filter is blocked, the built-in safety devices shut off the heating element so it doesnt start a fire

The really dangerous clogs are in the back of the dryer, and the hose that connects the dryer to the wall vent. Not that hard to clean, but TBF, it’s a bit of a PItA.

I guess some people aren’t very vigilant. College aged females. I’m not really an experienced appliance technician but I might try to go inspect it before the guy comes check it out on Monday to see if anything stands out.

It’s a relatively new unit so it could be an internal build up and not just in the duct. Didn’t think to look any further after I pulled out 2 gallons of lint from inside the duct itself.

Prepare yourself by watching a few YouTubes of similar model dryer. Take a voltmeter with you. I’m betting it’ll be one of those thermostat/shutoff parts, or the coil itself. Put the meter on them all. Last time I did this, the thermostat/shutoff didn’t have continuity, and I immediately headed off to the parts store…..but not only was the thermostat bad, but my coil was burnt out, too, so I had to go back to the store. If you try to tackle this by yourself, take pics at each step so you get it all put back together right.

People, especially the younger ones, are amazingly ignorant these days. Simple maintenance and troubleshooting are beyond them. Could be a broken heating element, failed thermal fuses, or in one case one pole of the 2-pole breaker had failed (those people used their dryer for years and just assumed it was a slow dryer, never realized they were essentially using their dryer on air fluff mode the whole time).

I do that for the most part but have used repair clinic. com to diagnose as well. I'll never buy from them because of the ridiculous markup but it's a good resource.

Another posable cause for the vent line getting plugged up, is the people could be taking out the lint filter and using the drier without it in place.

Does it vent through an exterior wall or through the roof?

Gas dryer - replace the coils
The coils are electromagnetic devices that allow the gas to flow. People are saying "replace the coil" they mean element. Electric dryers have elements, gas dryers have coils and igniter.

Electr dryer - replace the operating and limiting thermostats.
