Had 5 plants last year, and they decimated them. I live in a residential neighborhood, so shooting them is a no go.

Maybe you could place cayenne pepper around the plants in their path to them? They are difficult to manage unless you remove them or just go ahead and get them another food source such as peanuts.

A Tomcat Rat trap baited with some peanut butter. It won't kill them but the squirrel will be in the trap for you to deal with it as you wish.

The squirrel will be really pissed off.

Plant rosemary and lavender around them. It they are in pots put a few in pots and put them around. They keep all critters away including deer.

If you have never handled a squirrel don’t do this, they are mean and fast and will latch on to any body part if it gets away. I have worked in animal rehab and trust me when I say they latch on for good...

You can try feeding them something else so they don't go for the prize. Get them comfortable on something cheap and worthless so they don't go for the fruit. Like socialism.

Or inject the tomatoes with rat poison like communism.

Get an outside cat and feed it near the tomatoes.

If you have pests like squirrels and birds, you need to pick them at "breaker stage." Just when they start breaking into a pink/light red color you need to pick them and let ripen indoors. It's really the only way to avoid fruit loss to critters. I fought this for years, but they don't eat them before they are red.

Vine ripened is overrated. Ripening on your kitchen counter or window sill is not significantly different. But, please DO NOT refrigerate them!

I pick them a little earlier and let them ripen in a window. Never had squirrels or birds bite into a tomato that was more in the orange/geeen side.
