If used to be that the Tesla Powerwall could be bought for your home without their solar roof products, but they stopped doing that years ago.

I just want a battery system that could be charged up with grid power and used when grid power goes out. I don't need a new roof.

Do any options for this exist?

you could save some space by using a generator instead of batteries.

Watch some living off grid videos to get an idea of what is needed.

I don't have space for a generator...I assume the battery wouldn't take up much room and would hang on the garage wall, near the electrical panel...

yes, the batteries and power system they feed to your home doesnt care how they get charged, just as long as they get charged, so yes it can be done to create backup battery power with a bank of batteries.

the more important question is how long it lasts, and if trying to recharge them with a generator, what size and how long will that take?

If this is your preference, expect to not be able to power very much in your home.

Your primary power consumers will be the ones that use 240V (A/C compressors, dryer, oven, etc.) If you're only looking to power lights, fridges/freezers, and maybe a window A/C unit, the batteries would be alright but still have limited capacity with no method of charging them.

Have you completely ruled out a NG generator? The biggest advantage is the unlimited (if you pay it) fuel source. No trips to the gas station and enough capacity to power the whole home easily.

They are called a UPS, Uninterruptible Power Supply, large ones are used all the time in computer server rooms.

My coworker lives in Sugarland and just dropped some serious cheese on a Tesla home system.

I will ask him and revert. He was talking today about trying to send power back into the grid he didn’t consume so I suspect he’s having to store it for a little while.

I know he spent about 80k on all of it.

Could buy like 6 7.5kw generators or just get a 20kw generator installed just for the cost of two 3.3kw batteries.

Its a good idea, just not there yet.

Here’s another point I hadn’t considered. Generators should last as long as maintained (20-30 years). Highly doubt the same could be set about a battery pack.

Battery packs sized for a house backup are massive. The rectifiers and inverters are also not small.

A battery bank big enough to power your home for any significant length of time will be MUCH larger than a generator will be.

Hit up Billjamin. He comes across as very knowledgeable about alternate power systems (solar, wind, Tesla Powerwall, etc.)

Here's a wildcard for you: the Ford F-150 Lightning. It can backfeed your panel up to 9600W and when you look at how much battery capacity it has, it is a much better $/amp-hour value than a tesla power wall. It also doubles as a truck :D

How would you charge this when the power goes out and no solar panels?

A generator?
