I'm 43 male, 5'11 165 and have religiously worked out 6 days a week for my adult life (weights, cardio, yoga). It's my most important thing for mental and physical health in my life.

I had a dermatologist visit this week and he found a large area he wanted to cut out because it looked like basil cell cancer. Turns out it was and long story short on my lower back I now have 21 stiches. He said do not do anything to elevate heart rate in the first week and start walking, light things for the second.

I've never done this before and average 15k steps a day. I can't sit still.

I also have been bulking and seen the best gains/strength in years in the past month. I'm coming off PRs in the last week.

I'm really depressed about it, and I love to eat and have been bulking at 3400 cal a day.

What would you recommend for the next 2 weeks? I used to be fat years ago so now I'm freaking out that I have to cut my calories in half, or I will immediately start gaining fat since I will barely be moving.

Quit crying. It's 2 weeks son. I've dealt with multiple surgeries and injuries that put me on the sideline for months at a time. Be thankful they got the cancer out.

It’s only two weeks. You will gain back whatever you may lose extremely quickly. Look at it as a needed deload.

Follow your doctor's orders or your downtime might be prolonged. You won't lose any appreciable amount of fitness in 2 weeks (really 1 week because he said you can start light exercise in week 2). Consider it a rest week and get back to it when you get the all clear.

It's only two weeks. There's a good chance you go back to the gym feeling wayyyyy better than you did before. I take a week off every year and usually go back feeling a lot better. Even if you don't slow down on the eating you're not going to gain that much in two weeks. You should be able to quickly lose it, especially since it sounds like you have a good bit of discipline and know how you're supposed to eat.

Glad they got that cancer out. Hopefully your recovery goes quickly.

2 weeks isn't enough time to lose muscle unless you are very sick. I take 7 days off every 90 days and it has done wonders for me for repair/healing.

I would just maintain your regular diet. Are yo able to go for walks?

Back when I was bodybuilding I never took time off and I always had aches and pains etc. Being natty now the week off is a must and it makes a huge difference. I am stronger when I go back to the gym after a week off than I am when training 6 days a week. Don't be scared of time off from gym. Its hard to accept mentally but physically is a good thing.

He says no intense walking, so I just take my dog around the block and back and walk very slowly like I have to take a shite

Just curious for you guys that take weeks off or a week off, do you lower your calories?

Walk and decrease your calories down to maintenance. Youll be fine going without lifting for 2 weeks

Eat at maintenance for two weeks. The downtime will actually be good for muscle recovery. Catch up on some Netflix.

You may end up gaining some strength with the rest period.

I’d cut back the calories but also maybe use this time to work on some meditation or breath work?

Work on mobility. Especially at your age mobility will be more important and keep you in the gym longer than hitting huge lifts or PRs.

Everyone needs to do more mobility and you just got your excuse to find your weaknesses and target them for 2 weeks.

ETA: download the GOWOD mobility app and they have a full access library of movements by region of your body for free.
