Destination HM/Marathon

Apologies if this has already been asked (searched but didn’t see) but has any entered any “destination” half marathons or marathons that you’d recommend? Also interested in any that y’all would recommend in the Southeast.
Right now I’m looking at doing the Grandmas marathon this summer in Duluth, MN and either the Eugene, OR half next April or the Columbia Gorge Half in October. Also plan to enter the lottery for the one in Big Sur.
I live in the southeast and have only ever ran St. Jude in Memphis, but would like to start doing a “destination” half or full each year.

I’d recommend doing an ultra in the Southeast. Super fulfilling and amazing scenery. Tennessee and Georgia are loaded with amazing races.
I did the Cloudland Canyon 50 miler in north Georgia, but they also offer a half marathon version. Would 100% recommend and will remember the rest of my life.

That sounds really neat but I’m struggling now to get the miles in for marathon training - 2 young kids and work hours all over the place. Definitely something I’d like to do one day though.
Will check out the Cloudland half though, thank you!

I have the Missoula, MT and Grand Teton halves on my list to-do. Love the idea of the destination race. Just haven’t pulled it off yet.
Some running FB page I follow had a bunch of folks that did the Ljubljana Marathon in Slovenia. It appeared to be very nice and well run.

Disclosure, I've never run a marathon so I'm just going off what I've read and what others have told me.
What about something like CIM? If you're planning on doing some more prestigious races that could be a good one to get a fast time for the lotteries. As you mentioned, Grandma's is a good one too.

I do too - but haven’t done one yet either. Will probably stick to a half just so my legs arent to wrecked for the rest of the trip. Will check our both Missoula and Grand Tetons - thank you!
Would love to do CIM one day but I’m not to a point yet where I’m battling for lottery spots hah. Maybe one day!

I did grandmas last summer. Amazing run and couldn’t recommend enough. Just make sure you have a good plan to get to the busses for the start. The traffic race day is nuts.

Also be ready to have to poop in the woods near the start line. Porta potty situation was a disaster there.

Haha thanks for the tips - glad to hear you enjoyed it. Is there enough to do in the area to spend the week with the family? That’s my plan with these destination runs - the run is a small part of the trip, not looking to fly in somewhere for a weekend.

quote:Id say yes. I like the area alot. If you want to go super low key theres a single bed room 2 bed cottage in Gordan, Wisconsin (about 45 minutes outside of duluth) on Airbnb thats reasonably priced. Its attached to an old fire tower that they leave the key to and you can go explore at will. It was super cool.

I would probably advise against spending the whole week in duluth if you have little ones going with you but you can definitely get 2/3 days of entertainment out of it. Would probably stay in Minny for the first couple days then drive to duluth.

Big city wise start putting in for the NYC marathon lottery. Race is great. crazy to see how many people line the street to watch random people run by for hours.
International - I was told by a friend who has run 70+ marathon that Berlin was the best.
Outdoors / trail they're all great in their own different ways. Search ultrasignup.com. has filters to search location, month, distance.

Have you ran it yet? Where would you advise staying? With how expensive things are in Manhattan I'm thinking about staying near the Meadowlands so I'm close to a bus station for the start and then using the subway to commute back after.

We prefer small towns over big cities, we took a trip last summer to Boston and Maine spent 7-8 days of the Maine portion hopping from town to town (finding a central place for 3-4 days to explore and then a second similar location for another 3-4 days) and would love to do something similar with this trip (if it’s viable).
Interested in hearing more about NYC as well. I applied last year and plan to keep applying every year hereafter until I get in (or die).

I ran it 2019. got in with qualifying full time. if trying to get in with qualifying time apply the second it opens as the spots are first come first serve and they filled up last year. i think this is the last year they'll accept half times unless the half is a race that NYRR puts on.
We stayed in hell's kitchen area at an "airbnb" ( i don't think it was a registered one). it was maybe half mile to expo, mile to bus pick up at the library and then half mile from central park.
the people from the city fully support this race. its their mardi gras. day drinking and areas with people 3-4 rows deep cheering you along.

Awesome - thanks for the link! Has anyone here completed or know anything about the Imogene Pass run?
