What the title says. I broke my little toe a week and a half ago. I went to the doctor the day after, and x-rayed it. The doctor told me that I needed surgery or a cast. I chose the cast, only to find out the cast is almost knee high. Is this the norm for a broken toe ?

There was no dirt available to rub on it? Kidding. Pretty sure that’s standard.

Is it a toe or metatarsal fracture? Toe fracture does not need a cast! Metatarsal might need a cast

Big toe?

I fractured mine years ago and besides the first couple of days being a complete bitch I was able to wear a boot and in general tape it to my other toe to hobble around.

To my knowledge there’s not much you can do besides let it heal. It’s pretty funny that you have a fiberglass cast for that

Had surgery a few years ago on small toe. Doc never gave option for cast it was either suck it up or put a pin in it... unfortunately I have to wear steel toes and it did not feel good so I went with the pin

The cast cannot be any shorter. If you fall, get into an accident or anything like that you stand a chance of severely injuring yourself if the cast is only midway up. Basically, you can snap your shin like a twig.

The point of the cast is to keep you completely immobile. Either take the cast or surgery... if you don’t like the doc go get a second opinion. They may put you in a boot, which is the same height btw. But, then you’ll probably take the boot off b/c you know better and will just cause further displacement of the fracture. Which will then cause you to have surgery anyways so you would get full movement of the joint.

As always with these things.... know one can tell you anything without seeing the xrays.
