I’ve recently heard about calcium scoring. Is it a good idea to have it done if you have high cholesterol? No symptoms, mid 50’s. Any cons? Beside not covered by insurance.

I did it and scored relatively low. Scored a 25. My cardiologist says a good score is 0. Explained that it’s pretty much an indicative test to see if you have the gene for arterial sclerosis. Scoring a 25 says I do. He says that it validates why I’m on a statin and on aspirin therapy. Otherwise, I’m already doing the healthy things I need to do for heart health. I don’t drink nor smoke and am exercising to access. I believe in preventive measures as long as it’s not too expensive. 99 bucks didn’t change my lifestyle so I did it.

No insurance pays for it. Our cardiologists love it. Basically a screening tool to assess potential risk for future cardiac events in 5 years. It’s based off your age and gender and your result will put you into a percentile for your cohort. 0 is good. 1-10 minimal, 11-99 mild, over 99 and you’ll get further testing most likely. Some of patients getting valve replacements have calcium score of 4000-5000!! ??

Pros.. you know your score

Cons.. anxiety lol

Im 40. Always worked out and ate healthy. Never smoked in my life, dont drink. Weigh 155lbs...Had mine done in january... score 435

Then had to so bloodwork "all good" ekg, echocardiogram, and nuclear stress test "which i passed all with flying colors"

The downfall of a calcium score is it doenst tell if calcium is actually a problem and clogging an artery, or if its inside the walls and not a problem. Wife works in surgery, she said they have had people come in with calcium scores over 1000 and do a heart cath, and have no blockages.

So yea calcaium scores can be good to know, but also cause alot of worry and anxiety and more testing and money.

I am 50 and do marathons and longer distance triathlons. My weight, fitness, and BP is good, but I have to manage cholesterol. Maybe it was because of the cholesterol score that my family kept finding these stories of healthy people dropping dead in races and would hound me about going like I do. Never mind that the data shows that this sort of fatality, while awful and shocking, doesn’t happen very much statistically speaking to folks like me. They were convinced it would. So I went and got a calcium test done. It wasn’t covered by insurance, but it was only $100 and took no time to do. It came back zero and gave my family (and me) peace of mind. I am still running and gunning and happy. Also… and for whatever it’s worth… my doc said he wished everyone would go get a calcium test done, but he doesn’t push it because insurance won’t cover it.

I’m 42 and had it at 39. Work out 6 days a week. 5’11 155, lean and great lipids

Came back 1300

Cardiologist immediately did a cath and luckily arteries are clean and all the plaque was spread on the walls

Scary man. My dad and his brother both had quad bypass surgery by 45. Can’t outrun genetics

Had mine done at 48. I got a zero. Huge relief for me. My dad had his first heart attack at 31. I run a good bit. Now I need my APO B tested.

A friend had one,had no symptoms of heart disease.I don’t remember the numbers but it was sky high.Dr. did a heart cath that afternoon, had significant blockages and had bypass surgery next day.

great lipids
This sort of begs the question of what's actually being measured by conventional panels. I eat very clean - low carb, high protein...but sort of opposite what conventional wisdom dictates. My PCP wanted me to take one because my lipids came back "bad" - that is to say, LDL+HDL was deemed high (I think maybe 250), despite the fact that my tris/HDL is immaculate, as well as inflammation markers and fasting insulin.

Anyway, it was basically 0 - as I expected it to be.

No real downside in taking it - it's a very small radiation dose. If you think it'll give you peace of mind, then do it.
